My wife and I are just getting back into the sport. We are interested in getting a handheld GPS unit. We are a little confused on how a person gets ahold of trail maps etc. Pleas any and all input on units and where to find maps especially for Drayton, Ròcky and Nordegg. TIA

Honestly I would go with a inReach. Pretty good one stop shopping and checks many extra boxes

Wikiloc has a lot of atv trails, i tried a search and those 3 locations showed atv trails. Of coarse this is free if you own a tablet or phone. Also Memory Maps has awesome Topo maps that install on a laptop, tablet or phone, the cost for 1:50000 is about 25 dollars for the province.

+1 for Wikiloc on your phone, also links to Google Earth with tons of trails all over the world.

Having a communicator is a huge plus, so I'd recommend the inReach as well. I haven't taken a real good look at these since Garmin bought them out, but they look like they are built on the older 60 series platform which was an excellent, rugged, water proof GPS. I have an old inReach and an older 60 series which works great for me, but I'd much rather replace them with one of the new inReache Explorers.
