Issue with running - carbureted 2003 Yamaha breeze 125 youth quad

It will idle and run fairly well in neutral and forward......but the second i put it into reverse the engine just cuts out.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Was valve set on my brothers breeze couple years ago his kids acted similar

I think they had a speed limiter in reverse, if the reverse switch isn't working I think this is what happens
