Crown land camping/quadding - within 2 hrs of Edmonton

He everyone

Now that we have quads, we would LOVE to find some crown land places to camp where we can camp (holiday trailer - 25' long) and have our quads right there with us and be able to ride the quads right from the 'spot' where we camp

Anyone have some suggestions as to any particular little spots that would be great for this?

I LOVE being out near Entwistle as we love to go river floating there too......but ANY places within an hour or two would be great.

Try the Bighorn or Castle park.

back in the day we did a lot of random camping, our favourite spots were on the elk river road, there are numerous spots all the way down to the pembina forks and then back up to Edson. Once you start going out there you find all kinds of spots.

I've been weekend camping in the Hines Creek area this year,,, Quad with tracks.

Most areas show signs of 12" to 14" snow packs,,, of course there are spots deeper than that. Ha.

Floating on top is a good thing

Simple camping rig for me. 22 years of pick-up truck cab back seat sleeping system with all the fixing to move to different areas.

+0 with Sun shining up here today,,, alot better than the last stint of -30c and winds blowing. LOL

I've gotta winter camper travel trailer even with a shower fo any temperature but not really into anything lower then -20,such a good time!Sometimes I can't decide if I like summer or winter camping more.What happened with your winter camper design you had Lem?

The pop-top camper is coming along,,, I decided to slow the build down to allow for things to fit into place.

The xo skeleton shell is framed in along with the plywood stuff,,, the pop-top worked out awesome,,, this spring is insulation time,,, Windows,,, and the small stuff.

The back seat bed will remain since there will be days when the buggy will occupy the back depending on distance of travel.

The camper unit will fit into both trucks which is a plus,,, its getting the final work over on the big unit,,, the little cup cake Ford is good on fuel so I'll "try" to keep it as a fast run-about. It's covered alot of ground this year,,, Ha. Lots of tire chain time getting into those nasty camp sites off grid.

I still like the idea of fast and frugal when it comes to fuel mileage,,, hopefully they leave a few areas along the Eastern Slopes of Alberta open for those of us that enjoy the great outdoors,,, free camping is what its all about for me. LOL

I agree you can't afford to mess around in winter,I run with chains,potable 10,000lb winch and thinking of getting a tiny snowblower to bring along haha......gotta love packing/unpacking

i have heard that vega may be the best riding in north america, can't substantiate the claim, ha no idea on travel time from edmonton though

Yes, there are lots of areas to visit in the off season,,, if there is such a thing.

Getting there on a frugal budget helps,,, the saved coin on fuel allows for more days to spend on the trails.

The last 2 outting cost me "roughly" $80 to $100 bucks for 4 days riding with 3 over night'ers,,, the saving come from setting up in a staging area that allows me to use the toy only.

$30 of that is getting to & from plus warming up the cab to start the day and dry the riding gear under hood. Ha.

Nothing caught on fire yet.

Another saving for me is distance on the buggy,,, slowing down is a plus,,, taking in the terrain with more viewing,,, don't get me right or wrong,,, when I'm in the boring areas I do the Arff "pin-it" trick,,, then slow it down in the open areas.

Gives my old rusty brain time to spot the wild furry critters. Ha. I enjoy the frugal camping stuff,,, its all about the bon-fires and lawn chair time.

Preparing for it is probably the major function of my outting.
A little bit of 22 rimfire plinking,,, some Trad bow archery,,, or team up with buddy for ice fishing,,, along with some back woods bush time.

I'm sure that most of us fit this category.

What's not to like about sleeping under the bright stars at night, starting off the morning with a hot cup of coffee,,, and trying to fit our fat feet into frozen boots to start the day in the sub-zero mornings of dam cold.

If I had a hotel to stay in,,, there wouldn't be alot of things happen out side,,, so my small camping rig forces me to get out there.

Fast, Frugal, Free Lance,,, its what the doctor ordered.
That and a pocket full of plastic animals. LOL.

Did I mention that I'm a Boarder line wing nut. This is why the squires like me. The only difference is being nuts or looking for them,,, Ha

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.....I really dont need an amazing trail ride. We will have kids with us most of the time.

Just looking for a safe place to camp where I wont end up on someones property by mistake lol

Aaaaaand a place we can hang out, go quaddin, and hang around the campfire at the end of the night

The Brazeau Resevoir isn't bad. You can quad, swim, boat and fish all from your random campsite. Only about an hour and a half S.W. towards Drayton Valley. You will have to keep things secure and locked up though, been some theft issues in the past.

No swimming in the Brazoo Lake in the winter time. The water is very cold. Ha.

And wize to not set up where lurking hands are waiting to grab your goods.

Off the beaten path out of sight out of mind,,, that's why "off grid" works for me.

If you don't have tire chains,,, don't follow my tracks. Ha.

Bring winch and lots of rigging if your accessing the areas where I go. Ha.

Most normal humans don't need the extra work following crazy people like me into the wilds. LOL

This sounds like a perfect type of place to take the kids!!! they would love a good swim after a day on he quads

Extremely disgruntled folks out this way, myself included as Bighorn will quite literally be right out my back door and surround the already existing Eagle Point and Blue Rapids parks......which we've been told that there is no funding for.
Not sure if you all have seen this map of the proposed area but the dam access and camping appears to be in the proposed area yup.
