But really if you go with a dvd I would buy the navigator license it is for 5 devices with printing and will allow your laptop to work offline. A must for the ocean or aircraft. I just know I should not be putting this up here, but what the heck. Once copied onto your laptop then onto a micros sd card and install into your devices. register your devices into memory maps accounts. Once it is in the right directory everything will just work with your app. Apps are not needed on a laptop but a GlobalSat Bu-353 S4 is. Some will love this info some will not ...haha.

This will also be needed for 3d topo maps http://www.etopo.ca/etopo-downloads.html I only advise this for people who really want to see something unbelievable and never thought was possible, take some aspirins before you go down the rabbit hole.

Can you load that 3D topo into a handheld GPS?

    You have peaked my interest.

Not quiet yet, those dinky little screens it would be a pain anyway. google earths app is the most real looking 3d of all though if you have a cell phone you can plink it on. You can only have about 30 kilometer square in cache.

Re: GPS / Google maps, etc

The irony of it all is Garmin bought out Delorme, memory maps has delorme for free or 20US or26 bucks for the higher version. So you would have a Garmin gps with memory maps. Of coarse I would recommend topo 1:50000 over Delorme. Download time for a province with lower speed telus internet. 30 minutes for 1:250000 and 1 hr for 1:50000 so 1.5 hrs for both. That maybe way faster at high speed connections. The disk is 40 bucks and licensing for navigator is 50 US so 65 bucks, navigator with gps and printing to laptop 99 dollars, professional only 125us and professional with all the features for 5 devices 225. I have the 99us one, no professional options which include instrumentation and Satellite link ups. Sorry for rambling on so much, about something no one is going to use.

I use the MotionX-GPS app on my phone with either Google or Bing Satellite maps (depending on where you are, one map is usually more detailed than the other). Works really well as long as you keep Background App Refresh on and try to download as much of the satellite imagery of where you will be going before you lose cell service! It's pretty much useless without the map data. It's awesome being able to see a topo picture of what the terrain actually looks like around you. I find the GPS is always spot on. We normally have a Garmin backup with us as well just in case!

I was trying to make it work on my laptop with windows 10. So I guess it is like a Microsoft phone, seems they are way behind of gps navigation. What the hell Bing satellite maps work with..... Apple!!!! Now I have heard it all. This is just plain stupid.
