Sportster the ride for me? or should i perhaps look at a v star 1100 or something in that?

My girlfriend rides an '05 Sportster and for her its a great bike. Small easy to maneuver and very good on fuel. On average she uses about 5L less per fill up than i do with a 103ci Softail Classic. That may have a lot to do with the person running the throttle on each bike but who knows. For me though as a bigger guy at 6'3'' 220# the sportster feels like im on a kids bike. Lots of guys ride the their whole life and love them. Its all about what you want and like.

I had a 96 1200 sportster and it was a blast to ride. A little light on the highway so you get pushed around a bit on windy days. No lack of power though. I could flick that bike around.
My brother had a vstar and it always felt like it didn't have enough power and missing gear. Different bike and did not turn as easily as the sporty. Lower wider handlebars force you to reach more.
The vstar was a nice looking bike and if that what you get it's still a bike and they're all fun to ride.
My cousin did lots of trips on his 883 sporty from Vancouver island to Ontario years ago. It depends on your budget and stamina. He turned that 883 into a 1200 and it would almost outrun his dyna.

Nothing wrong with the new bikes. They have lots of jam. The older ones sucked bigtime. Solid mount engine would make my hands numb within 10 minutes. They changed the mounts a few years ago. Best bet is to go to the test rides next month and ride a few bikes. You will know for sure then. Jump on a couple sportys and a few other bikes to compare. There are some toher nice japanese bikes out there too you would be happy on.

Well dont get me wrong i would LOVE something bigger my dream ride would be a street glide but pockets arnt that deep and i dont want to make payments on a bike just want to buy cash out right.

If i can find a dyna or softail with decent kms for $7000 range i would by one but im just not seeing any.

Ive been riding for 3 years so i am by no means a super expereanced rider but not green either My logic was that even a 1200 sporty would out perform and would be a all around better bike then say a v star or a vulcan dont want to sound arogant here but some of this high end jap stuff doesnt seem to compare to the base harleys.

I managed to scoop a 93 Dyna wide glide for 6200$ this year. 50,000k, so it's far from brand new, but it got me onto a bigger bike. There are deals out there, just need to keep shopping.

FLHT- Shovel head for sale - $6500 - Edmonton Area Street Motorcycles, Cruisers, Choppers For Sale - Kijiji Edmonton Area Canada.

An old shovelhead, 83. Guy down the street has something like this, and it's been really reliable for him.

1980 HD Shovelhead For Sale - Edmonton Street Motorcycles, Cruisers, Choppers For Sale - Kijiji Edmonton Canada.

80 shovelhead, kick start only

Nothing super new in your price range, but the older iron is still out there. Simple machines really, get a service manual and don't be afraid to turn some wrenches and you may be happy on something older.

I got an 05 v star 1100 that might be for sale, it's the wifes but she doesn't ride it much anymore. Bike has lots of extras and good power. I ride a tuned 1600 marauder and she isn't far behind me When we ride hard. Awesome bike fun to ride.

Ahh, yea... Might be best off to go newer, haha.

As to the original question, I don't think a sporty makes a great long distance ride. A woman I know is currently upgrading her 883 for a softtail, looking for a nicer ride and more hauling capacity.
