Im a Harley rider but dollar for dollar all the metric manufacturers and Victory give you more for your money....but its not a Harley and to some of us that is more important. Long rides will be less comfortable on a sportster IMO
Pick the ride in the right price range that best suits your needs. Ill still wave.to you cause its about the riding not the brand or power

I have neer been a harley guy and never will be but, what I do know is that if you dont get the bike you want you will regret it for a long time.
I probably ride the most uncomfortable bike on the road but it was what I wanted and am happy with my decision.(see bobbing through BC thread to see what I mean about uncomfortable haha)

I do think that you will get better bang for your buck going with a jap bike in this cse but if a Harley is what you want, wait for a deal to come up in your price range and pounce!

Just my opinion.

If you go harley, stay with something 04 or newer. I was at house of thunder today looking at a bike. You might want to check them out. They do have some decent prices on their bikes.

I have rode a sportster and am not a big guy at all and fell like the bike was way undersized. There was enough power there but that was about it. I have had a dyna low rider and a v-rod and if you look around you can find a v-rod for really cheap and still have the harley name plate and that bike rides nice and is a blast to drive. I would have bought a vstar before a sportster but just make sure you get something over 1000 cc.

Another thought, grab an 883, put a 1250 kit into it for less than $600, still pay the insurance rate of an 883 while blowing the doors off a 1200....

this advice from a old biker and licenced semi retired bike mechanic,,,if its all you can afford, there fine, just dont try making into a bigger bike.leave it stock and it will serve you well.but they depreciate real bad, take the price you are willing to spend on a sportster and compare what you can get in a Jap cruiser, Sportster motors last about 30,000 kms till need rings.never reringed a jap V -twin yet.or buy a low mileage jap bike.I have a 05 Suzuki 1500 C90 Boulevard Touring,,it used to be a 07,,insurance wrote it off when it slid into ditch 3 yrs ago.,|I found a active 05 frame and bought some extra accessories and it just passed a very strick out of Province Inspection by local bike shop. it has 16,000 kms., I have put on 4500 of it before changing the frame, nothing wrong with 07 frame,I resold it to fellow in BC who registered it right away.,we have some stupid insurance adjustors here. will take $4000 for it. there selling for way more.with way less accessories ...it still has some damage on frt fender and a scratch on top of fake gas tank..
