what is the cost of the inreach ??? what do the plans cost ??? where do you buy them at ???

Several notes regarding pricing...

With a Spot you buy an unlimited tracking plan for $50 and leave it on all the time. If your using this to show your buddies or a group of people where you are it's great, always have it on...

With an InReach, the basic plan has no tracking (pay per point) and the second tier has 200 points I believe. However if your using it so your wife/husband can see where you are, then you can leave it off, and they can remotely turn on tracking to view your location, then turn it off again. So on the basic plan for $17 Canadian you would pay 95 cents each time you did this. Plus when you send a text message it has location attached, so you kill two birds with one stone...

I think I've been lucky with Spot. My Spot2 finds satellites pretty quick. I turn it on and send an OK message from the staging area. The location map always shows the staging area. Messages that I send to my wife thru out the day are reasonably close to the time and place I actually pushed the button.
My brother purchased a Spot3 this year and the one day he's been out to use it, none of his messages were delivered.

Spot must be feeling the pinch of competition. I lost mine a couple of months ago and when I called to ask about any deals for existing customers, they said if I paid the replacement insurance ($17), they would ship a new one to me. It arrived in 3 days.
If I ever get out again this year, I'll compare my Spot to my friends that have the InReach. I thought the original InReach required a cell phone and I don't like carrying my phone. I seem to lose enough stuff.

You only require a cell phone if you want to compose a message.
The inreach has three, pre programmed messages a la Spot available to send.

This season, my inreach has been slow to send. Not sure what's up with that?!

The basic in reach requires a cell phone, and the high end spot also requires a cell phone; spot connect. I had one before my InReach. I would spend 15 minutes trying to pair it just to turn on tracking and end up getting frustrated and leave it at home. I know the gen3 is more reliable however these frustrations led me to look around. I called spot and they admitted that it's more of a Beta product, refunded my $200 service fee and I havn't looked back.

They pioneered the concept, and that's all they have going for them. The devices lack the features and the network they operate on is know to be inferior.

The InReach SE model as well as the explorer are fully functional on their own. But can be paired with a phone to make typing a custom message faster. Plus the phone pairing is flawless. You open the app and it is connected every single time...

Just curious about using different phones on the InReach ie: my son is going to take a run with a few buddies and I hand him the InReach while I hang out with the "old fella's" at eh cabin. Is it a program that will allow it to pair with a number of different phones or not...do you know.

I hate the latest Tapatalk update .... on my phone.
