Inreach or Spot X

Yes it is a monthly plan, I believe they recently dropped the suspension fees on all plans. I leave mine on year round...primarily need it for sledding but I also take it on longer highway road trips and summer backcountry adventures.

IMHO, the inReach is still the better deal. Garmin is a lot better to deal with than SPOT. Better satellite coverage and more consistency.

After getting my recent CC statement with my spot renewal on it, it will be the last renewal. Ripoff for what you get compared to inreach. I’ll be switching to inreach next year.

The spot x plans are half as much as the inreach.

I have never not got a message out on the spot x.....

No I have the original cheap spot.

It’s $160 US a year, no texting or nothing. Just pre-made messages that get sent when you push a button.

In-reach is about $180 CAD for their basic plan and you get two way texting. The device is a bit more for the initial purchase but it’s a better deal long run.

I have the same one and said the same thing this year, it's ridiculous money for one way communication. I did not renew mine this year and will be going with the inreach as well. The spot 1 and 2 plans should be about half that money. (which is what it used to be) Fuk spot!

I’m still a fan of the Sat phone you can text all you want but it’s hard to quickly communicate urgency of the human factor without one.

I really like my InReach Explorer plus. Battery lasts forever, links with my iPhone flawlessly and I can get messages out anywhere, it’s never let me down. I take it everywhere and it’s rugged. Plan is around $48 a month, not sure the details of the plan but at the end of the day piece of mind and ease to change plans during the day and get distracted in another direction without feeling guilty that we didn’t get back to town at the specified time as per our DAILY TRIP PLAN left with people to check in is worth it. Sends location etc and the kids like seeing where I’m at during the day when we shoot a message out. The guys I ride with use it to send messages to their people too. I’ve had some awesome days out there when we changed direction because we can communicate with people and let them know we’re all good. Also super excellent when ‘super guide’ forgets his in the truck and you can send those $20 messages to his Mrs....lol

Same reason I got mine. Keep the wife at ease when I'm on the hill. The ability for her or the kids to go to a website and see where we are, and that we are still moving is huge for me. I went for the $34 plan. I am in the backcountry all year between the bike and the sled. Plus my wife has major medical conditions, so when she's with me its nice to know we can get help coming if the situation ever arose.

Spot x is 2-way....
$11.95 US per month for basic coverage which is good enough if you are using it for emergencies.

I’m actually thinking of canceling mine tomorrow and selling it for a 2 way one.

Way back in December of last year I see our opinions varied. They are still varied and hands down I prefer the inReach. To each their own and hope we never have to the magic button!

Yeah I bought it just to see what it was all about. It's a good device. Nothing like the old spots.

You guys really shouldn't be dettering guys from buying a spot x unless you have some first hand kind of experience with them that is negative.

The inreach is nice but is just about 3x the price.
As are the plans.

If guys are not willing to spend on the inreach I would still rather them have a spot x than nothing.

But hey I guess everyone just wants to be a brand ambassador.

One guy in our group had a spot last year. Sent a couple messages out for guys to pickup parts on their way from Alberta. Took several minutes to send the messages, and the messages were never received. Three of us have Inreach now, and I've personally never had a message not send. My inreach mini seems to get messages out in about 20 seconds.

I agree that something is better than nothing, regardless of price, color or brand if it can save a life or help out anything is better than nothing.
