mind me asking what you paid for it?
I'm with ferniesnow on this. I've had a spot for 9 years. last year I've had 5 messages from squamish to kananaskis that have not gone through. The other thing that chaps my ass with spot is their plan. I used to be 100 bucks a year. Then one day I notice it is not 160 (us). Everyone now has to pay for the trace feature. Try to cancel but you need to do at minimum one month and a day before it autorenews. Also no way to cancel online. Must call in.

Needless to say I just picked up an inreach se+. Maps, two way comms, and hopefully less dead spots.

It was on sale at cabelas last week. For 500. 525 tax in. Not cheap, but replaces my GPS, and spot. Peace of mind being able tell rescuers or friends what the problem is. I went with the 15$ a month plan annually.

My dad was out riding a few years ago and sh*t did not go as planned that day. A old fellow broke his femur. they had a spot and a sat phone. The wiener with the spot was so boned up to use it he convinced the guys just to use that. Well 4 hours later they finally got a chopper to the guy. That’s a long time to lay in the snow. With spot there’s To many channels to get to the same out come as just calling emergency Services directly. This year I’ll be buying a sat phone it will be a Iridium as the others just don’t have the networking to keep from dropping calls. If in a life or possible death situation I’ll pay for the chopper right now over possible having to wait for the next day.

I was part of a group that used a SPOT S.O.S to Help a guy out from Blue or Hunters in Sicamous. I was naive as you and said I couldn't believe it was 3hrs or so for the Heli to come, and it came from Vernon. But it was, I am not sure why it takes so long but I've seen other groups use Spot for the same thing, and it can take a couple hours. Remember where you are, its not like the ambulance is going to show up in 30min or less. Your in the back country.....

Yup same thing happened to us.
Hit sos and sit there in silence.

Dial 911 and they have to through several channels , geos then RCMP then sar. All takes time.

Get on the sat phone and 10 min later the chopper was there. Billed to mastercard, worth every penny.

Highly recommended Arrow helicopters out of Revelstoke.

Matt flew in the storm of the century to come and save us.

Definitely keep his number on your inreach or spot x.

Definitely nice to speak to him in person so he can hear your tone of voice.

I believe when another human hears someone in distress they go the extra mile.

True story about the tone in your voice. My dad broke his elbow in 11 places and broke his arm a few years ago right before dusk. We got on the sat phone and call a chopper guy directly. We had a discussion with the pilot and he said for that type of injury he was not willing to risk flying at night totally understandable. So we gave him 2 oxys and doubled him out. Two way communication with your rescuer is the way to go wether it’s texting or talking.

I get the point of the story but where do you get 2 oxy from?

Got 4 wisdom teeth ripped out. The dentist gave me a oxy prescription. Never used one after the surgery. So I had a few left over for those sorts of things.[/QUOT

what do you guys pay for the inreach plans annually

Mine is $16.75 a month for InReach. Basic package that includes preconfigured messages, other messages you send and receive are pay as you go...think it $.50 per message...I never use them.

Is that a monthly plan then? do you have to pay a fee every time you activate/deactivate it?

I pay $70 a month with no contract and unlimited features. Disconnect for probably 6 months a year but find it comes in handy more often than I thought I would use it. Its definitely cheaper then making a call from my radio phone
