So that referee is out, badly concussed, and he's not expected back any time soon.... Hockey nite in Canada just stated, never before has a referee been attacked and injured so badly. They are even contemplating a longer ban now..... Wideman's next review is Wednesday, so they'll find out then. The referee commission is pushing hard for lifetime suspension, to set an example to rest of league

20 games is a big suspension for a guy that has had no prior offences. He deserves it, no doubt but lifetime ban is over the top in my opinion. But we will see I guess?

I would like to point out that the official was not "attacked" as you said, he was hit. Attacked would be Wideman beating him repeatedly while he was down which he wasn't. Also the hearing on Wednesday is an appeal by the NHLPA on Widemans behalf which would mean they will plead their case to reduce the suspension. It is extremely unlikely and rare for a suspension to be increased let alone a lifetime ban from playing as that is extremely extensive to force a guy into retirement just because he had one significant on ice conflict in his whole career. However I wouldn't be opposed to it as he would no longer be a pylon on the Flames roster if he were banned haha. My prediction is that the suspension will be reduced by about 6 games give or take.

Also another interesting point is that if the official was injured so severely then why was he allowed to continue to officiate the rest of the game? Especially since their are always back up officials ready to go.

So if I walked up behind you and suckered you with a two hander with my shovel handle, that wouldn't be an attack ? I bet you would think differently, if it was you ,and you were injured and unable to work ?

I'm just passing on what was said on hockey nite in Canada... I find it interesting u don't think that was an attack. Blind sided to me is an assault or an attack bodily wise.... He finished officiating the game and is out now, for an. Extended period, and there is no estimated time given for that ref to come back because of the concussion........ They also questioned heavily, that the flames may be guilty of the new concussion rules, because if he complained to the trainer or team doc, that he would have been immediately sent to the room for concussion tests, but he continued and played to the end of the game.......... Might be a standoff on Wednesday. I doubt the nhl will take the players side over the referee Union, but we'll see Wednesday

Good point. You are right I would call that an attack and I would be lying if I said I wouldn't be upset that I couldn't work due to an injury. The difference is that in your example you are deliberately taking your shovel and planning to give me a wack. Where in Widemans case it was more of a spur in the moment thing. Any player that makes a plan to deliberately hit an official should be severely punished but I don't think that is the case here. It is an extremely odd case though with tons of grey area and interpretation which makes things difficult.

I wasn't able to watch all of hockey night in Canada I only watched the headlines segment with Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman and they did not say all the things you mentioned but I may have missed some things. I guess our definitions of attack may be different then, if you read my reply to doorfx above you can see my thoughts as to why I don't call it an attack. Also my point made about the official finishing the game was not a dig towards you at all I was just making a point that the NHL wont even follow their own concussion and injury protocols to use on the officials, but require those standards on players. Fingers and errors can be pointed multiple ways is my point. I absolutely agree that the Flames didn't follow proper protocols in dealing with Wideman and he should have been sent off for testing. I expect there to be consequences to the Flames organization once the whole Wideman thing has totally settled. I still believe that the suspension will be reduced only because he has a clean history, but if he was known as a dirty player then I would expect more severe consequences.

Frankly the end result of this will not be Widemans suspension, but how the NHL implements concussion protocol on NHL teams.

At this time Wideman is taking a bit of the hit by saying that he told trainers he was fine despite his actions, his wobbly knee's and the look in his eyes. He said he wanted to play and that was all that mattered. After the game he admitted he was concussed. The whole crap hitting the fan thing is how the team handled it. Virtually anyone who saw the hit and his immediate attempts to skate said he was concussed. Then he nails the ref out of character? What more evidence does a team need that a player is concussed? You cant go by a players word, by nature the injury is to the brain and the players reaction is going to be effected by this.

Supposedly there was an NHL rep in the stands who went to the Flames and asked them to pull Wideman and send him to the quiet room, they refused saying he said he was fine. No confirmation if this it true or not, but I suspect you will soon see an NHL rep in the press box every game with veto power to have a player suspected of a concussion removed from the game for tests.

Wideman was concussed, Henderson is now concussed, it has made all the major media circles, this will be the trump card which forces the NHL to make changes.

Couldn't agree more Stompin Tom. As you said they already have reps in the stands that are called spotters and they notify the trainers of any potential signs of concussions or contact that could have resulted in concussions which requires them to go assess and communicate with the player in question. The flaw in the current concussion protocol is that the player can refuse treatment and tests if they tell the trainers that they feel fine, which I don't understand because their judgement is already hindered due to a brain injury. There will definitely be changes coming in the near future.

I had no "intention" of giving you a whack. You just happened to get in my way and I was having a bad day at the office.

If you had no intention then why are you carrying an item around using it as a weapon swinging it carelessly? Does a bad day give you an excuse for you to make a bad choice causing bodily harm?

Wideman suffered a brain injury causing lack in judgement and awareness. Do I think he meant to shove someone out of his way while he was heading to the bench? Yes. Do I think that he realized that it was a official at that exact moment? No, because his vision was likely blurry. Do I think he intended to cause an injury to someone else? No, he was just simply trying to get back to the bench and someone came into his path.

I dig ditches for a living ,the shovel was in my hands. You were between myself and the lunch truck. My brain was not functioning because of lack of food. So I viciously suckered you from behind ,get out of my way. My intent was to get lunch.
Spin it any way you like, you are responsible for your stick, and your actions on and off the ice. If temporary insanity is his defense , then professional sports is on a very slippery slope.

I agree it is a slippery slope which makes it such an interesting and debatable case. I don't think their is a right or wrong opinion here there are just are differing opinions and points of views. It will be interesting to see what happens though.

I really hope they don't reduce it...nothing against Wideman personally or the Flames for that matter...I've been a fan ever since they stepped off the plane from Atlanta but I think they really need to start holding the players accountable for their actions. I know sports talk, along with mounting a plate on a sled(I had to)can stir up a lot of loyalty emotion and there's nothing wrong with that. My only bone to pick with the players today is that it's all about the money and they think they can get away with anything. They just kind of coast along through the regular season and its not until the playoffs begin that we really see some passion out of these guys. I've always said the best game I've ever seen was the Canada/U.S. final at the Salt Lake Olympics. Yes I'm glad we won but there should be no shame in losing that game. For 60 min every one of them on both sides played their a$$es off! If they played every game like that now they'd be worth every cent they get paid. Since they don't I get more enjoyment watching WHL, Juniors or even my great nephews pee wee team.
