Sled deck on 1/2 ton?

Just wondering if running a deck on a 1/2 ton is possible?. It would be on a 2012 dodge 1500 and have 2 sleds on it. Thanks.

Probably not. The only 1/2 ton I saw that was 'technically legal" was a longbox single cab current f-150.. and I believe it was a 2wd if not mistaken?

Many threads on this topic. The general consensus is that its illegal, unsafe and you'll have a big target on your back for the DOTs by doing so.

Legal or not, there's no way the coil over rears in a Dodge halfer would handle the weight.

lots of people do it and get away with it that doesn't make it safe or legal
trailer is your best bet.....
I got a 7, 3/4 foot by 12 foot trailer for sale 900 obo

Don't go by the GVW or payload listed on Dodge's website. I can pretty much guarantee you will not be legal with 2 sleds, as I have a 2011 and have been to the scale with 1 sled on my single deck and I can tell you there will probably not by enough payload for 2 sleds, unless you have a single cab longbox 2 wheel drive as mentioned above. Payload ratings are without passenger, and spare tire etc etc. Fill the tank full like you would be heading out to the hills, grab your buddy and throw a sled in the back and some gear in the cab with you, and drive across a scale. This will tell the real story.

I don't know why more guys don't actually doo this. The scales are easy-peasy! Have respect for the commercial drivers and don't get in their way. Use the self-weigh or the not so busy highway/commercial scales. Weigh the front axel, the back axel, and then both. Write the weights down. Then do the math.

My 2500HD long box with 2 sleds, 2 people, gear for 2 people, aluminum flat deck, and a 4 jerry cans of extra gas (truck and sleds were full of fluids but dry with no ice and snow build-up) was 200# under the GVW. That truck has a GVW of 9200#.

Air bags will level out the vehicle but will not make it safer nor legal.

CUSO, is right on the money. FernieHawk just did the whole she-bang with the truck, gear, sleds, and scales. There is a thread on this somewhere.

You can get single sled decks as in they dont expand wider for 5' beds which would be legal.......... basically an expensive box cover but on the plus side you dont need your tailgate down, you have ramp storage and still put stuff in the box.

truck boss makes them and you can later make them expandable wider.

ive seen lots of 1500s with decks in sask but generally one sled only.

Some reason a not to be named slednecks rider that has a tundra runs 2 sleds on a deck all over b.c. and has no problems.

do as modman has suggested, it is totally up to you. there are lots out there doing it, legal ???? have seen a few pulled over in bc, unloading the second sled. in alberta or sask you probably won't have a problem BUT.

Remember also a 6.5 ft short box is a lot different than a 5.8 +\- with regards to weight placement on rear axle.
Even a 1 ton mega cab should be e legal with the way the weight is hanging over the back.
A well set up 1/2 ton shouldn't be a problem 90% of the time.
Get the wrong enforcement and trouble.
A super cab 1/2 ton ford long box and no problem as rated quite high and truck is light.

yes it has alright, new guys have questions, may not be able to find answers, or know who to ask, it becomes repetitve, but i'm thinking it is better to answer or send him to the appropriate thread than to alienate a new member. if he asks a car salesman, he will be told it can haul anything. just my opinion.
