low compression in rev

So the girlfriend picked up a 2007 summit 800 at the start of the season and when I took it into a local sled shop for a preseason tune up and check over I was informed that it has low compression(85 in one cylinder 90 in the other). So they told me a top end rebuild would cost me close to $2k. I figure there's gotta be a better and cheaper way. I've worked on vehicles a bit but have never dealt with 2 strokes. Should I buy a shop manual and rebuild the engine myself or bite the bullet and have a pro do it? If it's easy enough to do on my own, any tips hi TS or resources would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the time do it yourself. It's not difficult. You should be able to download a shop manual on line for a small fee.

Top end kits on ebay for around $350.

07's had bad cyls, they had a nik problem, poor finish they would go grey.new cyl 600.00 and pistons and gaskets 310.00 and about 2 hours max of your time with proper tool and the right rye.

Yeah doing a top end isn't science rocket, especially if it hasn't grenaded yet. Get a manual, take your time, have a case of beer handy and you are good to go. Hardest part is getting the clutches aligned when you are putting the motor back in.

I never worked on a rev before but you shouldn't have to take the engine out. You can do a top end in the sled. It's easy on a 2 stroke, there's no timing chain or valves to deal with. Just take your time and take pictures with a digital camera of stuff as it comes apart so if you have questions when putting it back together it right there for you. Biggest thing is make sure you put the pistons in the right way. And powderhoundbrr I think it's rocket science and not science rocket

It is a byotch to get all 4 rings in and the mono jug down tho...in the sled.
If u put mcbs in. Which I suggest u do.
Better by 100% than a xp tho....

It's not too bad.. a second set of hands and some hose clamps around the rings to compress them as you slide them in and you are good .. like butta !

I know one thing I would never go to that shop again. $2000 for a top end rebuild is criminal.

Thanks for all the help guys. Sounds like I'll be doing it on my own. And LHF you're right I won't be going to that shop. It was the first time I'd gone to an aftermarket sled shop and although they were very helpful and knowledgeable I brought the sled in for a preseason and to grease the crank bearings and after I got it home I realized that they did the preseason and replaced some worn out clutch bushings but never did the crank bearing. I mentioned it numerous times and the day before I picked it up even called them to make sure they wouldn't forget but I guess that wasn't enough. I'm not gonna name the shop but I found them from being a site sponsor on here.

I've heard from someone else that the 07's had problems with the engine. The nikasil coating coming off, clearances too tight and that skiidoo did a recall/update and that the sled only has 1300kms I should bring it to my dealership and have them run the VIN and they'd be able to see if its been done and if not I could get it done for free. Anyone else hear about that before?

If you get a good dealer maybe? [at best],but if was under 2000km BRP were helping I did 5 07's after warrenty was over by 3 years?FYI I use to run a doo dealer for 9 years BRP has awsome warrenty if your dealers on your side.Clearance was crank cases,nik never flaked just went dull.

Hey Quintin, I can give you my friends names again that work for Riverside. Seeing how your under 2000k they should be able to push it through for you. Might cost you a bottle or a box of :beer:

Well it can't hurt to ask them. I have quite the good relationship with them. Bought brand new outlander and freeride in one year and about $10k in parts and accessories and gear. They automatically give me a 10% discount off everything I buy there and I got 15% off about $3000 worth of sled gear for me and the gf. Most the employees know me by name and I'm in there a couple times a week just to look around.
