Just checking to see what others do for sharing the costs of fuel and driving. we have a small group of 3 and sometimes a fourth tags along but only two of have diesels and do the driving and i don't think its fair that the others who never drive typically ride for free. especially this year it looks like we're going to make 4 trips and i'm probably going to be driving for 3 of them.

When we go, if theres three or four, usually everyone but the driver pays for fuel. If only two we split it.

Here is what works for my group..........the person that maintains the vehicle does not pay. I usually travel with four guys and three guys pay for the fuel and a little extra for maintenance. I'm up front with all of them the first time and thats what we came up with and it works out pretty good. After all tires nor is oil cheap for starters.

I have a gasser, my bud has a diesel. I don't think mine is as efficient as his when towing three sleds, but I try and drive as much as I can to make it even between our trucks. Sometimes we take one over the other because he has a 3/4 ton with a deck that is nicer in the springtime for unloading. No matter who's truck it is, the fuel bill is always split 50/50. Its part of the code of riding. Even if your truck is more fuel efficient and you are OK with driving, they should be splitting the fuel bill with you.

Ride for free? Since you & buddy have paided for the truck. They could pay for extra fuel/room/etc. I used to go with local dealer alot, outlaw relative too. He always takes his truck, moving build board. We all pay for fuel, each takes a turn. Typically 4 to the truck, each got a turn for paying. Another guy I know, since its his truck/trailer, he wont pay for fuel. The other people in the truck pay for the fuel, even its 1 other guy. I find that abit harse, but guess he spent the real $ on diesel truck, enclosed trailer, insurance, etc.

You have to pay to play. In my opinion if your catching a ride to the hill its common courtesy to split the cost on fuel for the trip there and back. Or alternate who drives each trip. Another option is to keep a tally for the week end one pays for fuel one for hotel and slit on the differance. Lots of options just have to be up front with them. No one likes a free loader.

one person in our group always pays for the fuel for the whole trip then we split the receeipts evenly after we fill backup once home. and we usually try to rotate trucks and drivers as not to rack up the miles on eachothers vehicles.

if i get a guilt trip about fuel costs or something along those lines that person doesnt ride with me anymore. it costs what it costs. some of trucks are gassers and some are diesels and even if we have to take a gasser i still never complain about the extra fuel cost as it usually onlu works out to an extra 20 per person or so.

it does get confusing when were using different trucks and different trailers with different owners all the time. besdt just to split evenly.

my boss is generous enough to give me a slip tank of fuel every trip, thats why i say ride for free.last year we had three different trucks for three trips so it wasn't to bad. but I don't think it's fair to me to put the wear on my truck. went once in december already and took 4 rocks in the window, and like mentioned oil changes. we were planning on leaving this weekend for another trip where i was going to drive again but i suggested tonight we take my brothers truck this time even though its gas because i would rather pay the extra 2-300 for my share of gas and not worry about using my truck.

Yes, and thats what we would do as well. one pays for the fuel and room and split it when we get back home, same with the sleds since they always seemed to be within a dollar of one another.

everytime we go we just take turns fueling up, it usually works out in the end to be pretty equal, it seems unfair to me that the owner of the truck shouldnt chip in. i wanna go sledding just as bad as anyone else in my truck, and if it wasnt my truck we would take someone elses. if your gonna be cheap about takin your truck, leave it at home. im sure one of your other friends will step up and come up with a truck. or just not invite you on other trips. thats just the way i see it. tires, insurance, and maintenance are just part of owning a vehicle. ive got almost 90,000k on my tires so dont wine about premature wear cuz YOU drove YOUR truck to the mountains everytime. thats my :twocents:

You bought a truck to use it, didnt you? If someone else doesnt want to drive, I will step up and drive. I want to go out there one way or another, and it doesnt matter to me how I get out there.
As for the original question, usually we have 3 people in the truck, and the passengers pay for fuel, and than we split the hotel between the 3 of us. Seems pretty fair to me that way.

Split the rooms evenly the fuel evenly and take turns driving makes sense to me. Maybe but the driver lunch or some drinks one night. Just don't be a fee loader or take free loaders with you.

like i said my diesel doesn't cost me, i simply suggested driving my bros gas and split his fuel. As far as being CHEAP about taking my vehicle, I think is a plain rude statement, cause i'm about as far from being cheap as they come, but i'm trying to be fair. I don't wine about using my four place inclosed.

if you each have trucks / trailer outfits, then split the costs, either per trip or split the cost of each trip.

The problem is when 1 guy has the best truck / trailer combo. I have a friend who has an aweseome truck and a 4 place enclosed. To go to Revy, he has the best set up. In those cases, he doesn't pay a cent for fuel, even for his sleds. I will often buy him a dinner as well. With 3/4 of us, it isn't that much money.

I am very grateful to sit in the back, relax, watch a vid, have my sled and gear warm. It should never cost him to bring me sledding.

What pisses me off is when guys try to nickle you down to the last dime for costs. Completely ungrateful for the ride. They are no where to be seen when I am paying $1,000 for brakes or changing the oil on my diesel every 5,000 km.

It probably has more to do with attitude than actual cash that is exchanged.
