Oh man

82 Polaris cutlass 340. Blow top end
replaced with a 440. Blow top end

90 Polaris Indy trail deluxe 500 top end.
rebuild then top end again years later

05 Polaris switchback 800
5 fawking motors in 3 years. Every single one sheared the crank off at the clutch

08 xp summit 800
top end and a heli ride out of Allen
the blown again several years later and replaced with a 860. Still going today.

97 670 summit
top end traded it for a dirtbike

2015 freeride 800.
absolutely exploded that motor. Rod thru the block and into the starter. lol
replaced and still giving er as of yesterday.

Nothing beats sledding. Haha

Only 2; an 2005 Escape 159" 300 km from the back of the truck. Sure glad it didn't happen earlier as we were back in 29Mile south of Ferne. Got it rebuilt and sold it.

The second one was a 2017 G4. It was a warranty claim for $8600 and change (according to the bill sent to BRP). To this day, we don't know what happened. Either the technician didn't want to tell us or they didn't take the time to dig deep enough to find out. At -25C it wasn't a pleasant trip getting back to the truck.

I must be the anomaly here cuz I've been riding for 18 years now and never had a sled engine fail on me (knock on wood). Either I'm super lucky or not trying hard enough haha.


Although I did get a 4.3 V6 out of a GMC Jimmy to tell knock knock jokes as a teenager. Something about 4-4500rpm for minutes on end pulling a stuck truck out the snow will cause that.

Jason was instructed to not even tear it down but to box it up and send it back to BRP Doug. Complete new motor was dropped into your sled

I forgot to add that the first sled I bought was a 1972 Arctic Cat 440 Panther and bought new sleds every year for a long time back in the day. Took a hiatus while the 4 boys were going through the hockey thing and in the early 2000's I started back up again. Many years of sledding and many sleds later only 2 motors. That is pretty amazing.

Man I love my meadows!!

Only 3! I had 6 in mine! First one blew with 1460kms the 6th went in at 1690km. One time it’s didn’t make it out of cycle works shop after a full motor rebuild. I was waiting to for it to be done to go to the mountains. Went to pick it up. They had it running and were topping fluids up, I went and backed my truck up to the gate to get it loaded. Walked in the shop and it was sitting in the middle locked up tight. Almost cried lol. They lent my a sled for the weekend

ive been pretty lucky since 2010 have not blown an engine, I dont keep a sled around long enough to do so i suppose. but before that....

first mountain sled

2000 Summit 600 top end at 4000km. rebuilt, bottom end went another 2000km and grenaded, added a shortblock and nitrous, granaded, added a big bore and nitrous, grenaded again. That was it for that sled LOL Purchased a new 2010 summit and havent blown an engine in the next 11 machines ive had.

The only other failure ive had was my 2014XM turbo, First ride had the fuel settings completely wrong didnt even last one pull before i melted the top end. Rebuilt and have put another 1500km on it flawless.

Knock on wood, over 45000 Mountain KM on BRP products since 2010 and not one failure. Take care of your stuff and it will take care of you

my exciter sized up, swapped motors and the girlfriend burnt it down again... sold it

Had it good since!

2007 rev. motts 880 3 times. 1st time squeaked a piston. 2nd time blew base gasket. 3rd time squeaked a piston again. rebuilt it into a spit second 860 and sold it.
2011 154" etec dropped a piston locator pin, that was a complete long block. 4400km
2011 163" etec dropped a rod out the bottom of the block. 4200km
since then been good

Haven't been sledding long but got a few motors.

'01 rmk 800 broken crank. Replaced it with a 780 big bore, SLP I believe. Melted the top end real good.
'05 rmk 900. Sheared the pto clean off
'13 proclimb. Put a 925bb in it. Took it out for a test run in the field and didn't put the bottom screws in the hood. It popped off the airbox and ate a bunch of snow. Cylinder and piston there.

My wife get's great milage out of her sled's too, they all seem to run for the life of her ownership plus you never need to worry about belts on her sleds, they last for ever. Go figure, that's what happens when your just a doodle rider. And a good doodle rider too. LOL
Maybe I should become a doodle rider.

1975 Moto-ski Nuvik, air box bolt got loose and went through a piston skirt, then cold seized the new piston riding like an idiot after zero warmup.
1978 Moto-ski Futura, seized a piston....maybe two, can't remember. It had more than one engine in it's life. Probably from snow ingestion riding hoodless.
1981 Yamaha SRX440, snagged a ring and scored a cylinder. I hated that sled!
1990 500 Indy seized a crank with about a gazillion kms on it.
1992 650 RXL, seized a crank due to moisture from the previous owner storing it for two years improperly, then lost a piston skirt.
1997 700 RMK, lost a couple pistons after a precautionary rebuild. Never used Wiseco pistons again. All good after that.

Lot's of other sleds have been boring but survived. I've never had an engine issue after 4 AC M-series sleds. Just sayin.

Those M series 800s were bullet proof. Buddies son had over 6000 miles boosted.

bought a new to me 07 m1000 in 09 with 420 km on it. decided to install a speedworks y and exhaust along with gauges and boondocker box. read some where on interweb safe exhaust temps are up to 1400. wrong. meltdown on first hard pull. #1

new top end. then a couple rides later, cold seized after sitting for a lunch on a cold day then not warming back up properly. #2

another new top end. then about 4 rides later the crank bearing went. i guess driving 30 miles out after a cold seize creates a bit too much aluminium fillings for the bottom end. #3

fawk it. Canadian dollar at par. order a crate engine from some dealer 40 miles north of thief river falls Minnesota. drop it in. first ride out, 20 minutes on the engine, we hit 3+ feet of powder. held it to the bar all day. that was almost 10 years ago. never skipped a beat since.

like they say, break it in the way you're gonna ride it.

Probably racked about $60k of warranty work. My second 2016 axys was my longest lasting engine. I've noticed when I get new engines they feel detuned and weak.
