The thing I've noticed over the years is people carry/use one of the little tiny compass that comes on their rape whistle attached to their bag. They don't work very well when you can't get it out in front of you, and away from any possible interference.

If anyone has a basic map reading compass similar to the one pictured kicking around and not being used and would like to donate it to help get this course off the ground it will greatly appreciated.

I agree with other guys. If they don't want to buy compass for the coarse, they are there only for the Donuts.

Looks like this one can also measure slope angle. If you are buying a compass for sledding make sure it has that feature. The ones that are in a little box and have a mirror to make it easier to read works better.

my phone does this as well until the battery dies

Its all great till your battery shets the bed. No one thinks of that when all is good rosy but in a desperate situation when temperatures drop and your relying on your electronic devices that suddenly decide to shut down.
But then some people never venture past their well rode garden, then the devices works great.

The course will be offered for free or on a donation that i will transfer'd over to SARs. That's my thought, i have no plan's on profiting on this.

Thats what I wrote yes. I have a micro start for backup power. If the temperatures start to drop who cares what angle the hill is? On another note, the compass I carry is not as good as the ones posted here, so I will probably acquire a similar unit in the future to practice and hone my existing orienteering skills.

Are you implying I never venture past my well rode garden? Sounds a bit condescending. I like exploring new areas and try to stay within my comfort zone, but I also continually ask the group leader about directions and landmarks as I get turned around like anyone else when pushing into my unknowns. Good thread here Mike, raising awareness is good, I was just showing that the phone app is likely good enough to gauge any slope and everyone up there usually has theirs for pictures and gps tracking.

Haha, no i’m not implying anything towards you or anyone person.
Its just a general comment. Most people try to stay within a comfy zone and nothing wrong with that.
The stress alone of being and getting disoriented can be enough to ruin anyone’s ride, especially those relying strictly on their device just to find out the battery died an hour ago and stopped tracking.

Well people, this is not forgotten. It will take some time to set it up and put it all together but i'm working on some of this today.
I'm very busy so i'm aiming for the fall before the beginning of next season.
I'm hoping to have a course out line posted soon.

I agree with some of the comments on here, if your going to take this course you will need to get the gear required, its not a big investment.
I appreciate the feed back and comments, remember i have never done this so i value any advise in setting this up.

If you still have a GSAR manual kicking around there is a chapter on compass use and navigation and I believe some exercises as well. If not let me know I think I still have one.

i think this is a excellent idea, and would benefit alot of people. as for compass i think they should supply there own just like taking a avi course you supply your own beacon,probe etc. i know alot of people are lost in direction almost all day when not in there own backyard, and any tool they can learn would be great, and what your offering is great since it does not rely on batteries for in the backcountry. imo if there is any help you need to organize and push forward with this idea i feel you just would need to ask and you will find alot of people willing to help. great idea and alot of work to organize something like this so thank you for your efforts hopefully this can benefit alot of people

Years ago , long before GPS, I worked for a company up around Stewart BC. We plotted and mapped logging blocks, roads etc. all with a compass and a hip chain. The accuracy is amazing if you know how to set it up and use it. (Magnetic north vs True North)
I wouldn’t go anywhere in the bush without my compass.
Great idea, I hope it comes to fruition Lund.
