Thinking about building a sled lift something like the one Princess auto sells. But was wondering what size tubing and wall thickness you guys have used on yours. Ive read the ones from Princess auto is a little tight for a 16" track.

The plans I have call for 1"x2 and 1"x1.5" by 1/8" wall. But I was thinking 2x2 tubing would be easier to get and might be cheaper.

Any Idea what kind of material cost Im going to be looking at?

Thanks

I bought 40 feet of 2” inch recently and was a bit shocked at the price. They claimed steel pricing was only gonna get worse.

Any reason I couldnt use all 2x2x1/8 instead of the 2x1 and 1x1.5 ? the 2x2 is about a 1 dollar cheaper a foot.

Might end up to wide for 36”” sleds in the a arm area. Your going to add a lot of width and bulk to it.
Try finding a guy who sells steel on the side or smaller fab shop to buy length of 1x2. Could use 1”sq or 1-1/4” for other size

Not going to be using it on any 36" wide sleds. It will be 27" at the widest with the 2x2 tubing. How wide is a 36" sled at the inside of the skis?

Where you might run into trouble is the height of sled and the a arms when you put under with the bigger tubing. That’s the thoughts that come to mind. Maybe it’s non issue

I built both of mine out of 1"x2", but a friend of mine used 2" square and it works fine. He has no issues with it.

Those are the plans I have. Hows the width for a 16" track? Should a person add a 1" to the width?
I haven't used mine on any sleds with a 16" track as I work on primarily old iron. The lift points do seem like they may be a little narrow for a wider tunnel, but setting them out farther may be problematic for fitting through the skies. You could just alter the rear tip up lift points to have a wider print. I actually made a few modifications to the plans to have lower clearance for the older stuff. If you're going to use the lift for working on sleds, wrap the front lift bar in rubber and use trailer door bumpers on the rear lift points. That will help with stability alot, especially if you move the sled around in the air.

I can send you dimensions of this style if you want to build yourself. Went through a few different styles of winches and ended up putting an electric winch on it. That was probably the most expensive part.
