I found an interesting read regarding caribou in the Financial Post.....I have copied/pasted an intial post to pique interest.
Jamie Lim, chief executive of the Ontario Forest Industries Association, argues the push by environmental organizations to save the woodland caribou is part of a broader effort to restrict all industrial activity under the guise of protected species legislation.Those efforts typically revolve around picking an iconic or widely loved animal and rallying support around it. In a December 2007 report by the Ivey Foundation, a coalition of conservation groups named Save Ontario Species laid out a step-by-step guide on how to successfully lobby government on species protection, including “selecting key species with strong public appeal” to act as flagship to stop widespread industrial expansion.

This just goes with what we have been saying for years, Caribou are just the "species of convenience." When they're gone it'll be something else. The fight will continue.

I agree. I think it gives more credence when people high up in industry also speak up and take up the charge. Not that our voices aren't heard, it is just like banging one's head against the wall. When industry starts shaking the dog, hiring biologists, and doing things to help the problem, the government will start to listen.

Industry has been working closely with government on this latest round of planning. Current proposed habitat restrictions will virtually eliminate the forest industry from Tumbler Ridge south to Osoyoos and east to the AB border. There are ongoing consultations with the PM office around science based conservation as well as the socio-economic impact of closing these operations on small communities as well as the GDP.

Conspiracy theory. Not a chance in hell they could ever do that in secret. Capturing and translocating ungulates is way too high profile and labour intensive to ever be kept quiet after the first 206 takes off.

I heard that the Government is trying to reintroduce the dinosaurs in Western Canada, not sure how the Caribou will fair once that program takes off.

they did it near barkerville and wells for years and only bout 10-15% every survived the transplant to new zones they are a super stressed animal to begin with and flying below a chopper

They've done transplants here unsuccessfully a number of times. What I'm saying is the rumour that they removed some in secret this year reducing our number is down to four is fake news.
