looking to buy a used T-3 174"or a Gen 4 in 165" or 175", Love my 2014 163 X XM but want more track, Caveat emptor law applies and all ads say no belt issues, It seems like getting a 2016 174 X with 2 more years warranty might be a safer way to go in light of all of the bad press on the 850, My problem is that I am only 5'7" 165 lbs, 56 yrs and I have been waiting for a chassis like the gen 4 for a decade to make as my last sled before getting out of the mountains. I used to ride an 2008 XP 800 (Bison) and find the XM initiates and holds a side hill better and is less tiring, but I need more track to keep up with the group. Is the risk of having reliability issues and financial pain for belts worth the handling improvements of the gen 4? i wish i could believe that none of these sleds are going through belts as all the ads state.

We have/had 3 G4's; 2 '17's and an '18. No belt issues (all of them with original belts) with 1300 and 3000 kms on the 17's and now 1200 kms on the '18. We don't do long pulls nor chute climbing and are a little long in the tooth for long periods of WOT. Seem to work quite well for us. It seems to me that the guys that are WOT for long periods of time are developing a lot of clutch heat and the belts just aren't standing up to it.

The 850 might have other more costly problems than belts particularly after the warranty is finished.

The axys had been good and the 18 cat has been too.

Or roll the dice on the 19 doo and let us know if they have it dialed yet.

imo i agree with ferniesnow with the belts,my 17 850 is on original belt,i also think that possible the guys doing long wide open throttle pulls are the guys getting belt temps up.i see alot of 850 up on the mountain and dont hear of alot of belt issues for the amount of sleds up there. i also came from a 08 xp and you will find the 850 is effortless compared to the xp. im also a light weight person like you [5.5 and 136lbs] and pushing 50 years old.did have issues last year but seem to have got all the bugs worked out and machine has ran flawless this year. i have ridden with others who have the 850 and they are not having belt issues either

So a guy shouldn't do long wide open throttle pulls?

I have never said that (not that you quoted me) and I realize that BRP has issues with high clutch temps and belt problems in certain riding situations. Should it be that way and BRP dropping the ball on some riders belt warranty? No, it shouldn't. The Summit is a mountain sled and it should be able to handle all of the riding that is available in the mountains. I don't have belt issues and love my 850's. IMHO, they are a better riding sled than the '15 T3 174 that I had. The 850 is getting me more places, more comfortably than the T3 174.

So far had good luck with my 175,,, pulled a guy out from the backside of keystone,, long hard pull,,, lots of tree and creek riding a few long wide open pulls,, really happy with it,, It does use more oil than a 800 e-tec but not much more,,, I think it uses more oil because it has to when the boost injectors wash the oil out of the bottom end,,, And that is not a bad thing,,,, My opinion

One of my riding buddies is 75 and pretty near goes anywhere I do. What ever sled you buy won't be your last

Did they ever find out why the motor went in your wife's 850?

They told me "they didn't know" but that the Mag side piston had no compression. After tear down they couldn't pin point anything.

Is this a new development?

This past January, we had to pull it out and they replaced the motor on warranty. I mentioned it in passing. No problem with the dealer and BRP only took two days to approve the warranty work.
