Lots of sleds and a pretty small area

Was there on Saturday was only about 30 sleds, and the areas pretty big if you explore you can keep dropping ridges into 51,52 and 53 haven’t been further then that

Quartz is a good spot for you if you want to have some fun but have some less experienced people with you. The riding starts right after the cabin so people can go warm up quickly if needed. You should have no hassle with your truck and trailer.
Snow can get beat out quickly but get there early after a snowfall and you’ll get some pow.
Lots of traffic is a good thing is you have less experienced with you as you aren’t pulling out stucks all day

Many good rides there, great trail system, and pretty safe over all, some real decent technical pulls just behind cabin when snow is deep

at end of meadows there is a good pull and big hill, along boundary.. had a slab slide happen there once, but fun spot overall, another good pull just north of cabin..

We did AST1 field day there and that slab had slid with a nice side hill trench going over the cornice... lucky guy! We were able to go around and look at it from the top when the sky cleared up, nice climb!

Right on thank you very much for all your responses everyone I'm sure we will enjoy it, hoping to score a map so I don't go past boundaries lol, is it as hairy as ppl let on about getting checked with your rig and tires and stuff? Like I know we should be legal with a f350 2 sleds on a deck and 2 on a trailer, this is our first time going this far in so trying to get prepared as of what to expect, has anyone ever stayed at the travel lodge!? How is it and is it secure for the rig!? I've got a switch in my truck so they can't Hotwire it, anything else you's can tell me or let me in on thanks fellas I appreciate it

check out Sled Golden website http://sledgolden.com/

ask for a map when you pay your trail fees.

Yup, you will have a great time at Quartz. Very easy sledding left at the cabin in "Cabin Valley" that has open areas and some easy hills. Good for practicing side hilling or control through small bunches of trees. The flat area will be pretty packed down by Saturday afternoon but looks like good snow coming this week! I was there this last weekend with my 72 year old Dad and we had a ton of safe fun in Cabin Valley and a little bit to the right of the Cabin in Rolly Polly. That side has some decent hills ( like ski runs ) but there are few flat places for the inexperienced to turn around and feel comfortable. Everything is on some sort of a hill or angle there. These two areas alone could keep you busy for 2 days and that is less than 20% of what the whole area offers. The experienced riders will head up and over into some of the big bowls where there is more snow and less tracks but also where some of the avalanche area exists. I would say that I had next to nil avalanche risk in the areas where I took my Dad. Not sure about the Travel lodge but I'm sure it is fine. I quite often stay in the cheapest room I can find ($55 bucks) and it is definitely a place that my wife won't stay with me. Go to the BBQ Pit on the south side of the highway or the Bears Den on the north side for Dinner. There is also a decent car and truck wash in Downtown Golden if your sleds get mucked up on the way there. I hate riding a salt covered sled. Gas ain't cheap in Golden however. Enjoy! I will be taking my wife to the trails between Gorman and Quartz in the near future after I get her a little more comfortable.

Lol to the avalanche areas

Not sure if a few of you realize that to get to the quartz cabin there is 5 slide zones that you just never know when, just saying

Yes quartz is a good newish rider area, but it has consequences to go to and from

What I'm saying is there is safer places to go with new riders and families than golden, but I understand it's closer so...

The thing with Quartz is that you often have to go through intermediate terrain to get to the easy terrain.

And some spots that look easy are way off camber and will suck you into the trees.

From cabin if you go right up the well pounded or groomed hill it brings you into big open area. Stay centre and you should be fine

You have beacons, probe, shovels and know how to use them? It always gives me a bad feeling when people are asking advise for "safe" areas. You really should know how to assess the terrain you are in, if not hire a guide.

Basing a trip safety level on internet advise leads me to believe you don't have enough knowledge. Hire a guide and learn from him.

Well to be honest I really don't care what your beliefs or assumptions are, I've taken my avalanche courses and have all the proper equipment I need to have, the fact is I've never ridden this spot so how would I know what to expect?! It's nice to hear what other guys have to say about areas hence that's why there's all sorts of forums on this site,
