I'm not entirely sure if this post is appropriate, so feel free to remove if it isn't :)

A buddy and I are travelling through central BC (on/near Canada Day ) and going from Calgary out to the coast (unknown exactly where yet). I have a gun (non-restricted rifle) I would love to bring and shoot, if at all possible. Does anyone have land? Information for applicable free outdoor ranges? Does anyone want to show me how to better use my gun? I am a newb, honestly, but really enjoy it.

I was hoping to just find a friendly local to hang out with for an afternoon who could show us "the ropes" some, and possibly suggest/have a place. I'd love to be able to try shoot a few hundred yards? Outside is much preferred. You can shoot my gun, rounds are on me?

Anyway pm me with any ideas, and thanks in advance.

Well you can shoot on just about any Crown land in AB provided you are not infringing upon posted firearm restricted (no discharge) areas like some Public Land Use Zones, on road ways, highways, other parks which may be on the crown land, and so on. The Wildlife Act does have more specific rules relating to hunting activities, and there can be specific zone/town bylaws which are more restrictive.

BC has recently introduced new, more restrictive rules on Crown land shooting. There are Forest Service Roads for which you cannot shoot withing 400 m of. I haven't looked up the specific areas but if you are going to be shooting there you may want to.

As far as any public "free" ranges between Calgary and the Coast, well you will have to do some internet searching but many small towns have ranges on the outskirts of their area.

My first outing I spent hours on the internet looking for a place to shoot (less official than an indoor range) and the consensus was that MacLean Creek was the place to go. We headed that direction, and when we got there we then spent another 30 minutes talking to people there, to determine m,ore specifically where people shoot. We then shot for an hour or so.... when walking out we got an hour long lecture from a conservation officer about how we were NOT allowed to shoot there. A week later I spoke with a cop I happened to bump into, and asked where they shoot.......... The response was "MacLean Creek". So that cop then offered to assist by speaking with their neighbor who is a CO...... that response "We do not want anyone shooting at MacLean Creek". (and really... who cares what you WANT..... what is the LAW?) In short it was a giant cluster-fck, pain in the ass, and I still do not know the correct answer.

That is the problem with searching the internet for places to shoot... and really the entire reason I was asking on here for some local insight.

McLean Cr is a FLUZ/PLUZ with numerous OHV users. It is crown land but within McLean there are numerous posted areas that are restricted to firearm discharge as people were careless and shooting into or across designated trails. I can't count on one hand the amount of times we have had encounters with reckless firearm users there.

I have shot at the Millerville end of McLean for years. There are several spots that you can get further away from the designated OHV areas into cut blocks and safely shoot and be within the confines of the law.

As you posted in the snowmobile section about shooting firearms, the problem could be you and not the internet.

That will be the extent of my help since you are so understanding. Cheers.

I didn't find a "shooting" section... please enlighten me if there is one?

I find it funny that you were oddly unhelpful. Your suggestion was "check the internet" lol (which BTW is exactly what I am doing). I am asking people who are known to be outdoors type people, who talk about guns regularly, and somehow I am the bad guy?

Uh huh... I see. It was a legit question, hoping for legit feedback. Instead I get ridiculed and mocked because I'm not a card-carrying red-neck. My bad!

The time we went to MacLean... there were signs "do not shoot within 1km of this sign" we used our phones and walked a KM into the bush. I'm not sure what more I can do. Apparently asking on a forum is a no-no. *shrug*

I go shoot out on the farm. Make friends with a farmer maybe?

This is where I shoot now, when I am in Calgary.... I have a friend less than an hour away where I can shoot. I was looking for something similar on our way through BC. I'm truly surprised it's so difficult.....

Anyway thank you for an actual suggestion.... *appreciated*

i live in Bc most the time, everyone around here just shoots where ever
they want on crown land. (Farther away from civilization the better) Or people shoot down at
the flats in revelstoke

Appreciate the ideas. I will see if I can find more info on "the flats" via Google. :)

It is actually illegal to shoot at the flats, people do though.

But head up the wap lake road or any fsr road really
and find a safe spot. We shoot up on boulder even
in the summer time with no issues.
