Sled Batteries

Have had Earth X in everything from my last Pro to dirt bikes and street bikes. Great battery and very light. Cold crank amps are about triple what a normal battery has of the same size. The trick in cold is to cycle the key once and then let it sit for about 30 seconds, the cycle gets the battery warming on its own and then it will crank. After the first start of the day cold on the truck it will start immediately every time with no issues. Only ever had to use the cord for the first start of the year and after that it was E Start.

A Battery Tender will not be 2 amp. The Tender Jr is 0.75 amps and plenty for maintaining, the Tender Plus for Deep cycle and RV batteries is 1.25 amps. If you are using a 2 amp charger to maintain you will overcharge and cook the battery.

Be careful on light batteries, there is different chemistries used by different manufacturers. Lithium Ion is somewhat tolerant to cooler temps, but LiFePo Lithium Polymer are Not. A small 2 Lb battery can crank over a heavy beast like a Harley, but will be unrecoverable after a period of time at -10. The shops will usually carry 2 kinds: YUASA (OEM equipment for most Japanese machinery) has a 90 day warranty and usually a premium price, Parts Canada's own version, they have a 1 year warranty and for 2/3 the price you usually get 2/3 the life with proper maintenance.

You can get battery tenders (different brand) that can charge up to 7 amps now. We just bought one at work to try out. Way more sophisticated then the battery tenders I have at home. Will do all batteries and supposed to be able to bring back some batteries that are sulphated. Remember that just because it is rated for 2 or even 7 amps that they don't always put out that much. This doesn't include a normal battery charger. They put out whatever they feel like it at the time.

This is not really correct with todays chargers. A maintainer (such as the battery Tender or the smaller Noco/CTEK Chargers) will not just endlessly supply power to the batteries, they sense the battery loss and will only supply power when needed, thus there is no reason to worry about "Cooking" batteries.

It is correct in saying that best practice is to only supply 10% of the total aH rating of batteries when charging them from empty, but for maintaining this isn't really a factor.

I swear by the NOCO Branded stuff. Its amazing how many batteries I have brought back that I thought were done. - Has 0.9A charging and 3.5A charging, will do lithiums etc.

Being my sled only has electric start I put the charger on it a few times a season... Going on season 4 with the factory battery.

This is the one we just bought and works pretty good. Way more advanced then the ones I use at home. I may buy one or tow of these. NOCO brand.

Yeah I have a couple of them now, 1.1A to leave on my camper batteries, 3.5A to move around etc. Ever since I started using them my batteries seem to last much better then before. Never been anything but impressed with any of the NOCO product

Just talking about it made me just buy another one. I bought the bigger one I posted about. Ill use it in the motorhome to keep the engine side battery charged up until it sells. Great charger for other stuff as well.

I'm sure you will get good use of it. I was actually debating on permanently mounting one of them in the engine bay of my truck for the winter. Was going to just tie it into the 120V line for the block heater, and will help keep give the batteries a boost and topped off during those cold winter months. Anything to help turn over the diesel at -30, plus should help them last a few more years which isn't a bad thing when considering the cost and hassle of replacing them.

Todays "Maintainers" for sure. But you can still walk into Crappy Tire and by a 2 amp Battery Charger that will over charge a small battery such is used in recreational vehicles. Bike shops LOVE these, they go through hundreds of batteries in the spring and almost half are thanks to "Canadian Tire Chargers".

Anywhoo..... So there's really only 2 options, EarthX LithiumIon for $350 (USD?) or lead acid for $125 (from Magnacharge). Think I know What's About to happen here. Thanks for the replys guys

second winter on mine M8000
goes dead if I don't use, but works good after a charge
had a few very cold starts on it and it got the job done
hope it lasts longer than the black plastic earth-x I bought

have used a balistic battery for the last 3 years
i have never had to charge it even after sitting in the sled all summer
does suck when it is cold below minus 15 it wont start the sled the first time in the morning after that it is good all day

I've done 3 seasons on my Antigravity battery with no issues.
2 seasons in my Nytro and another in my SW, starts and cranks flawlessly all season long. Sled travels on truck deck and now going to be looking into a forth season of use. I do maintain the battery during off season.

I’m on my 2nd earthx warranty battery now
and it’s flat out junk .
charged it up a couple of times to ,
took it out of my sled for my last rip of the year and just
went to pull start
it was not bad at all
and I might not buy a battery at all next year
for that sled

the earthx is so light in comparison to the lead
type , but it just will not last, Evan with a chip in the top
to prevent low drain or sleep mode

dont waste ur money
I wonder if there’s a gell cell bat for sleds
smaller and just enough to crank it
not some 50lb lead tank ???
