I have lost 2 phones while sledding. 1st phone is somewhere on Jackfish pipeline, other is at the bottom of a train wreck crash on Owlshead Super Bowl. Phone was a mangled pile of broken glass metal and plastic. Went along nice with 2 recracked ribs lol. That was an awesome ride out

gps on the handlebars which a guy can glance down at when needed, and nothing but my beacon in my pocket from now on

Haha, people treat phones differently for sure, i too had to ride out once with broken ribs, but better than crawling out 1k with a broken back. They do make rugged phone out of china with a radio built in with unbelievable battery life for around 300. It clamps onto handle bars too. It has great cell range and is cracked..... Dam!!! I just checked the radio feature is vhf Uhf you can put the RR channels in there. Long range radio to boot, with built in electronic compass, gyro and altimeter. Only 1500 dollars. It will not wipe your azz but has gas tester to see if you sh!t yourself.

I have the Rino 650t and love it, takes abit to figure out but loaded with AB/BC back roads and birds eye its perfect for me and the map detail is impressive. I keep it in my truck and it comes along hunting/quadding/sledding/skiing and every other time i go in the backcountry. I used to use my iphone with maps loaded but we all know what happens to an iphone when it gets alittle cold, shuts off and left us screwed 2 mountain ranges back from where i thought we was. Sure glad i had the rino stuffed in the bottom of my pack to save our asses.

Now that ive gone to an andriod, theres better options that i might try. I'll still rely on my Rino tho.

what is the cost of birds eye and would it have value by itself?

It was cheap, like less than $50 and will work on its own with Basecamp, way cheaper than backroads map book. I still like backroads for all the road names/directions and details

Birdseye is amazing at times, they update the sat imagery sometimes so it can be winter sometimes and summer sometimes. i have some winter imagery downloaded that you can follow sled tracks on, that's how detailed it is. Google maps does not even come close. Unfortunately some areas are very poor quality. Either way worth the $30 or so dollars a year.

Memory maps works on the iPhone and so does google earth. i own android products so i am not sure how good they work on an iphone, but hey they are all free so it does not cost a dime to try them out. If it works half as good as android then it will be twice as good as your garmin. After doing a google.... it shows google maps to be the highest rated map app for iphone. Of coarse Memory Maps is obscure but man does it work good , same with google earth app. I think you are going to be surprised how well this stuff works, I have been using Memory maps or 20 years now. Iphone hardware i am sure is far superior to your garmin. Funny is leaving your iphone behind and taking your garmin instead believing it does a better job at navigation. Kind of like racing a sled on a pair of snow shoes.

well my iPhone only last about 30 seconds out in the cold, then the battery dies and it shuts off! Need to store the piece o crap under my nutz just to keep it on if it's cold out side!

Not sure why they cannot put a good battery in a 600 dollar phone, catch fire and burn I guess, my 200 dollar Samsung tablet last easily all day on the back of my sled in the cold. A 90 dollar acer phone last all day to, mostly on my body. I will not waste another 30 dollars on birdseye imagery , try a tablet ...download google earth app...not google maps...google earth. Set the cache size to large, zoom into the area you are going to let it clear up... uptakes 5 seconds or so. And that is how clear it will be when you are in the bush ...offline.

My iPhone 7 lasts all day in the cold.

Took them awhile but they have found a way to make them work.

So with the smartphones, are you just taking along satellite imagery that you zoom in on to display the area you're in, or does the phone display the area as well as Indicate your changing position on the satellite imagery? If the latter, you're saying that a smartphone has all the capability of a handheld GPS even without cell service?

Most phones and tablets have gps. Won't be as accurate as waas that a Garmin will use but with the detail of satellite imagery should not be hard to figure out where you are. With that being said I have not used it yet but am going to this winter. Plus can have the GoPro app to run the camera too. I will keep the phone off when not using so it does not interfere with beacon. I'll post some screen shots if I get it to work.

I should say that you have to download the area you want to ride to the device a head of time. Then your position should show up to with in a couple meters, not feet like gps but should be as good being able to see real world terrain.

Memory maps on my phone, tablet or laptop is extremely accurate, just as accurate as my gps's. Google earth however is not as accurate and twitchy but you will have 3 D imagery which is cool. Also you only have about 20kilometers x 20 kilometers after that it is blurred. There are more than 100 different mapping apps for an android.

My 89 dollar acer last all day can take a 32gb memory card and only cost 25 dollars a year with a 7-11 Rodgers plan. It takes ****ty pictures.... but the maps work great.
