Ham radio license doesn't make you legal using these on GMRS or Resource Road frequencies. Just sayin. I'll keep doing it anyway.

I really wish my buddies did not have the low power BCA radios last weekend when they could not get out of a hole they were in.
They could hear me but I could barely hear them, I had to get closer to communicate with them.

You were at Bell? My experience had been Little bell kills radio reception, Not sure if it’s the rolling mountain that gets between you? Have had lots of experiences there where we really haven’t been that far apart from somebody and can’t get contact. Real poor results trying to pole a guy on a 5w rhino and have needed a guy to run up to the top to make contact with a 8w boafeng a few times.

I agree. We got asked about it one time with our hard mount in the truck and it chirped when we were pulled through a check stop. Had it on the RR channel that we needed going into an area. Cop knew his stuff. Asked if we had a ham license I did for at the farm. Asked a couple of other questions about it and then basically said they're not kosher but thank the lord people are at least trying to avoid wrecks on some of the FSR controlled roads.

A couple of things you can try. 1 Turn your squelch down. The ones I send out are set a 3 you can try lower (menu 0) Also antennas work way better with a ground plane. Take your radio out of your pack and put it on your tunnel. VHF will get you better distance but not available to BCA or Rhino.

I had a couple of guys this week phone me from the trailhead telling me there channels are gone and it is speaking Chinese. What has happened is you have reset the radio and have lost all the programming. So what to do to make it usable? You can put it in frequency mode by holding the menu key down while turning on. Now the question is what frequency do I need? To display the frequency that you are using on another radio you can set both A and B channel to the same channel. Menu 21 will allow you to change the display to either channel name, frequency or channel #. Change it to frequency and there you go. the channel # is always shown in small numbers on the right side of the screen. When you get back home if you have bought a programming cable you can set it back the way it was.

Not all the baofengs switch to the lower channel when transmitting on a external mic only about 1/2 of models do that. I just love it when they say it just started talking chinese... haha. Or when people order in their own radios and cannot program them, i would say i have programmed 400 of these alone.

Have you tried a Wouxun SMO-003 without a cover?
Do you have a source for these. Can’t find them online.
My newest b-tech mic was flaky on its maiden voyage.

They seem to work good for me, i paid 65 dollars to get them in the past but i cannot find a supplier that will send them to Canada anymore.
