pros and cons to can on snowmobile

i have a 09 polaris dragon switchback and just wondering if putting a mbrp can on my sled would do anything to the motor? I am wondering if i am going to have to do other stuff to the motor if i put it on. and also i could use some pros and cons to help make my decision easier

no you will be ok with just a can on and u shouldnt have to do anything else with it. Not really to sure of the pros and cons I like the cans for the sound and found that they livened up the sled a little bit as well. i had an mbrp can on my m7 and loved it nice soundin can that is forsure

The best thing I did to my sled was lose the suitcase aka muffler.

If you ride on trails, cans and excesive noise has a bad effect on the life of trail systems. Landowners and others target our sport because of noise and other issues. Noise #1 complaint.

Put one on my 2010 summit. Agreed gives you a little more power but not much. I did notice a difference. (Might be the same idea as the KLIM and Snown and Mud sticker though). Biggest thing is the weight loss and sound. If you would like a louder beefer sound then the great. I would use caution on the trails though. No you don't need to do anything to the engine with the mbrp can just stick on and ride.

all great info biggest benefit is the weight loss and the cleaner look on the sled. But yes the noise can get you in trouble on a trail system I myself like it loud thats why i like my twin pipes w/stingers :d

Be careful with cans on the newer sleds. Although most manufactuers will show HP gains of 1 to 2 and around 10Lbs weight loss, some of the cans are actually losing power when put on the dyno. That will negate any HP to weight ratio gain.

I have a can for one of my sleds...strictly for the race track or riding in the middle of butt fug where there is no one around for many a mile. On trail or near people in any possible way and I use stock can.

My wife told me if I get a can on my new Poo and it is as loud as the old Poo was, she is calling the cops on Me! I live on an acreage and I personally like the sound, however, it is not loved by all of my neighbors or my wife at 2 am!

I just put the mbrp can on my 09 Dragon and it is definitly louder then the slp (that is now for sale). But i ride in the mountains and their is now one around that cares if it is too loud. If i was on the trails i would keep the slp not much louder than stock and still gettin the weight savings.

thanks to everyone who commented and i am still deciding between slp and mbrp i like mbrp more because of the noise but i think id get in more trouble with dnr if i had it

All pros if you ride the big hills. If you're hitting trails then keep it stock as the weight shouldn't make a difference anyway. Or go with SLP. They're basically stock except when you it WFO.

Yeah...some of the manufacturers are really trying to keep the noise levels down. It's become that much of an issue in many places! Low noise and low weight is good. I would not bank on any HP gains at all though.

Good to see some of the aftermarket manufacturers getting on board.

IMO..... go with the MPRP trail CAN, I got one on my 2000 and it sounds great and not too loud. I had a race CAN on that sled and it was TOO LOUD, started to piss off the neighbours and had to replace it. :d:d:d

A few of the manufactuers make trail versions of their can's, besides the race(loud) versions. They give you the wieght savings, and will not be much louder than stock, a bit more wide open. I know MBRP, and D&D do for sure. Just a suggestion. :beer:

Just some info for the mountain riders. If you think running a loud can,pipe stingers whatever is OK in the mountains you are mistaken. You may not see them or even know that they are nearby BUT telimarking skiers are also out in the mountains during the same time we are. These skiers are out to enjoy their wilderness experience as well as us. They hear the louder sledders out there and they go home and they complain to the government that their experience has been ruined. Worse yet if they are a commercial outfit with oversea clients. Not just heli skiers complaining. The government decides that to control us snowmobilers they have to come up with a reason to remove us. Caribou come into the picture now.

So go ahead and get the loudest can you can find or go after one of those new Generation 2007 noise limiting cans save some weight and save some trails and riding areas. Its up to you to make the choice on our riding future.
Thinkl I`m full of CA CA just ask someone responsible for snowmobile use in the backcountry. they hear it also from other users.

I have a 2008 Summit 800 R. Was told that a can wouldn`t make any extra power just weight saving. So I bought a SLP generation 2007 can. Just a bit louder if anything but easier to adjust chain and I can mount a muffpot easy. I saved some weight also
