I was guiding today on the Icecap and almost have a hard time believing the retarded sledding I saw. A group of five or six with 4 of them hitting a north aspect loaded slope with the others sitting right in the middle of the runout. If the slope let loose the whole group would have been buried. Come on guys smarten up out there!

just goes to show that anyone who can shell out the $$ can buy a sled and do stupid stuff, ANYWHERE!. Like I have always said, they should include an avy course with every new sled bought, jack up the price. It may not help everyone, but then again the natural selection will take over if it doesn't.

....That is a point, But one would think that will not happen in the near future...The more peeps using common sense & training will reduce the risks. People have to respect this sport as a privilege & conduct themselves accordingly....But as we all know as in any social related maners, there is going to always be people who just have no respect for themselves or anyone else for that matter...that is really too bad. :(

So how many this weekend? According to the CAC not much has really changed over the past week. Here in the interior around Big White ski Resort we got 33cm of new snow over the past 24 hours so here we go again. I'm heading out in a few minutes with the wife but meadows and trees is where you'll find us. Have a safe weekend everyone and use your brains.

Dissappointing pictures. I agree with bigfoot and cuso - We need to remember that sledding is a priviledge and not a right. Crown land is owned by all of society and if society deems the area off limit to sleds then we need to respect that. If we continue to abuse the priviledge, it will be taken away. I know this goes against the "break all the rules" culture that some people adopt as part of their "extreme" sledder experience but we need to find a way to curb that type of attitude without squelching anybodies fun. On this site, it is clear we want everyone else to respect us as sledders. Maybe we have a ways to go in earning that respect (at least collectively)?

It's disappointing to hear that the unsafe practices are still occurring. Old bad habits are hard to break. I've been asked before..."This area won't slide will it???or It's not that bad..." (WTH!!!!!) My reply "Ahhh, yes it can" response from other rider....is denial. I find myself riding more and more in the trees and meadows- even when there is deep pristine snow. I'm not perfect either, but I am not in denial.
It's sort of like not wearing your seatbelt, booze cruising, driving&talking on your cell phone, or not wearing a beacon/shovel to look for your buddies that wear them. Eventually over time somethings going to happen that you cannot control-sad, and true.
Mountains don't have feelings, or care about backcountry enthusiasts.

In regards to the Frisby photo.I believe that the trail does go to the left there, and you can't drop down until after April15th.....not that it looks safe to do so...
Ride safe.......

Here is my stupid pic. from Mar. 13.
The 2 guys in the middle are stuck and then you see the guy on the left starting to climb and the guy to the right cutting across above all of them. The hill was sluffing in lots of spots but that didn`t stop anyone.

off topic but that spot @ frisby is sweet, the ridge back over to the green tower is pretty dicey at times, deep snow over there yander.:beer::beer:

I tried giving a fee avi course with sleds bought at the Calgary sled show and got not takers, everybody took a cash discount or parts credit instead.........perhaps next year will be different.
