in the process of buying a 2003 skidoo summit 800 zx chassis. on the trail, throttle to the bars and the skis lift, plenty of power. when we were boondocking through the trees in powder and i hit the throttle to the bars i get a bog, loose power. guys around said it sounded like it was "spuddering and gurgling" I pulled the plugs and they were soaked in gas. cleaned out the carbs but i dont think thats the issue. if my reeds were broken i can see where that would cause a bog but would that cause it to run rich?

I'm not a mechanic.... but when you're in the powder could you be sucking in some of the snow? I know my sled has a tendency to do this.... then it cleans itself out one the water has burned thru...

You know, I've heard of this but I'm not real sure that's my issue. I don't think that would cause me to run rich (but i dont know), plus my air intakes are under the windshield and the snow is crappy here so its not really getting up there. The sled is also a real chore to start. since my buddy has had this sled its always been a one pull starter and now it seems to take 4 or 5 pulls before it kicks over. It has been sitting for a couple seasons since he bought his xp. Only ran it a couple times last year. Anyone else have any feedback?

Rave valves gummed up? Also I'd check and reseal all the exhaust joints, in the powder the exhaust gets restricted and if there's a leak at a joint it'll affect the back pressure which is needed in a 2 stroke. My '01 800 Summit used to bog once in a while in deep powder especially sidehilling on the exhaust side.

If it's been sitting for a while it woudn't hurt to pull the carbs apart, pull the jets out and make sure they're not gummed up from when it sat. Doesn't take long for gas to turn to varnish. My '01 hadn't been stored properly before I bought it and the pilot jets were plugged up causing a hard start cold.

Yup couple things to check. Reeds, rave valve correct operation. And your Dpm solenoid functionality. Another thing to try is he carb heaters I have had them clear up some weird issues like that.

yeah i was riding with the carb heaters off because it was a warm day, turned them on to see if it cleared up, no change. Someone else told me to check "the solenoid" no clearity on what solenoid he was talking about or where it is or what its called or how to test it. maxwell do you know where said "solenoid" is and how i can test it? also is there a part number? maybe i will just replace it if its not too costly.

It is engine Bog for sure? Not a shifting issue.

My 1000 CF ran awesome on hard pack. But in snow the engine would scream but the sled wouldn't go. Spent a lot of $ trouble shooting it.
Finally one of the guys we were riding with noticed a bit of snow build up under the secondary. I had a small tear in my belly pan, snow was getting in, hitting my secondary and causing the Belt to slip.

Have a look, maybe its not an engine bog but belt slippage.

No, your problem is in the motor if the plugs are soaked. Either the DPEM failed or you lost a hose off it somewhere (they failsafe to full rich when they break or become disconnected),the intake is blocked, the reeds are shot and letting too much fuel in, or the carbs have something stuck in them and they are flooding out. The carbed sleds are easy to troubleshoot.

First place i would start is the spark plug caps ( clean out the black crap), mine ran like ch!t at full power until i changed the coil wires and caps. And make sure you have the 18 thousand plugs br9ecs -5 or iridium -5

Hopefully that was it.... but my guess is, it is where your exhaust pipe goes through the belly pan... there is to be a snow deflector ahead of where the exhaust pipe comes through to give the exhaust somewhere to escape and it is usually ripped off from dragging them out of the back of pickups... also being 10 years old, the rubber seal around the pipe in the belly pan is probably rotted and gone... therefore when you are in powder snow the exhaust is likely going back into the engine compartment and starving the sled of oxygen!!! You may still want to check this out!!

good call. i plan on really tearing into the sled and cleaning everything up anyways just because it is older. Fun Fact, the dealer looked at my serial number and siad that this sled was #1 off the line. thought that was pretty cool.
