Whopper and I have been around the block and back trying to get insurance for our snow bikes. We finally got what we are looking for but I'm wondering how much brain damage you guys encountered trying to get insurance. I've been denied due to them not knowing what to call it or how to write it. Just insuring the bike is easy but as soon as you add the kit these people have no idea. I'm not going to leave the kit out of the policy as it's worth almost as much as my bike. It amazes me how... people are stupid...

Who did you use and what did it cost? What coverage?

How many were denied because you don't have your class 6 motorcycle license?

Are these not classed as a Off Highway Vehicle, the same as Snowmobile/Quad/Utv's,( 4X4/6X6 SXS's) Argo's ??? Show the insurance company the bills for the total cost of the product and ask for coverage for that amount. It should not matter if it has 2/ 6 or more wheels.

I have my 2007 Polaris Ranger 6X6, Tracked all round and a Custom Windshield/Metal DP Roof/Flat Deck with 12"sides/front and rear with a (cap)top. insured with co-Operators for $25.000.00 for somthing like $350.00 per year. But if I file a claim I will have to produce my sales receipts, It is like insuring a new car. Show me the money. I do not ride the tracks in the summerand they cost me close to $ 4,000.00 .

Biggest problem is they don't know how to write it up because it's not just an accessory as it replaces the wheels. My kit is even insured in the summer while off the bike.

The bike VIN says its a bike. Bolt on accesories are accessories and should fall under that category.

On a related note, I bought my kit with my credit card. The card protection plan covers theft and also adds a year to manufacturers warranty. ;)

It's not that easy. I tried that route.

Odd. When you insure a motorcycle with a trike conversion, it's still a motorcycle.
Insuring an off-road bike that remains an off-road bike shouldn't be a problem. It's a bolt on accessory. Just like 17" SM wheels would be.

What insurance co. Are you with?

This was tried with Allstate.

Apparently when you change tires to a track and ski they don't know what to call it because it's no longer a motorcycle.

It is what the VIN says it is. Insurance company ought to know that.
They need not complicate things. Just adjust policy to reflect the replacement value.
I could see problems if it were a street legal bike and you took off DOT tires to ride around town on a track kit, on public roads.

I still ill have to put my bike together before I insure it. (It's in Tupperware containers)
i'll let you know what luck I have...

Maybe time to dredge this one back from the deeps. Trying to get a snowbike insured is causing me some brain damage...LOL

So I sent over my bill of sale, told them it was a snowbike setup, and have this response and quote.

------------------

In order to get liability coverage on a snow bike, Nordic requires that a Vehicle Inspection Report be provided.

- The quote for $1 Million Liability and Accident Benefits would be: $390 /year

If you are wanting any kind of physical coverage (i.e. collision or comprehensive - fire/theft/etc), Nordic would also require that an up to date appraisal be provided. The below premiums would be on top of the $390 above for liability:

- The quote to add comprehensive coverage, $250 deductible (fire, theft, vandalism, hail, animal collision….) would be: $1200 additional/year
- The quote to add specified perils, $250 deductible (similar to above; however, does not cover vandalism or animal collision) would be: $675 additional/year
- The quote to add collision, $500 deductible & comprehensive, $250 deductible would be: $2050 additional/year

Once you have had a chance to review, please do not hesitate to let me know of any questions. We would be required to obtain a copy of the Vehicle Inspection Report at the time of application in order to bind coverage on the snow bike and issue a pink card.

-----------------------

What are the rest of you guys finding? Was told that they have a category now for snowbikes, and that you if you insure as a dirt bike that you would not be covered if something happens on the snow in that configuration. And of course the value is higher so a guy wants to be covered on that and not just the base bike.

cheers, looking forward to hearing what others are up to.

If memory serves me correctly, the Alberta Snowmobile Association had an affinity program with an insurance broker specializing in off road vehicles. I have sent them a query to see if that relationship still exists as I could not see anything on their website. Will advise if I hear back.

And the ASA very quickly provided the following reply to my inquiry:

"You are not mistaken! Drayden Insurance offers discounts to ASA Members!

The Morinville location can be contacted here - 1-800-463-2300

And the Edmonton location can be contacted here 780-482-6300

I would imagine they should be aware of and have a solution to Snowbike insurance for Alberta at least.
