what does everyone think is the better engine for a snowbike? 2 or 4 stroke and why.

Thanks all.

Lol yea all toys are a pain in the ass at one point or another.
Whats the reasoning for the 4 stroke being a better option? I have always road 450’s but have always had 2 stroke sleds . Is the torque better with the 4 strokes vs 2 strokes? Do you shift more with 4 stroke? Only reason I ask is because KTM has come out with a injecteted 300 2 stroke that I would love to get some opinions on. I’m only looking for opinions regarding the bike on the snow, not in the dirt.

I currently ride a TX300 with reeds, pipe, shaved head and some clean up in the ports for dirt and an FX450 on snow. I have to run the 300 on 50/50 pump and AV and I love this think and I'm looking forward to the building a fuel injected 300 snow bike for next season! I spend most of my time in the trees rippin' as if I'm single track dirt ridding and I think (hope) this is going to be a great machine for this! I also like the fact I'll be able to rip it down in a day for a top end for a lot less money. Guess its all what your looking for really but I'd say an injected 300 done up right is going to be a great bike.

The biggest advantage with the 4T has been gas and ride. FI is easy to tune and as long as you keep engine temps up you are basically trouble-free riding. The 4T have a larger torque curve and powerband. Where I was using 4 gears on my 300, on the 450 I use 2. And in the mtns, the engine braking of the 4T realy helps in technical riding over a 2T.

The 300 needs some love for the mtns. Hi compression head and aftermarket pipe for sure. The FI should take care of the jetting issue and carb heat requirement - but that will be at least a year off. And the first FI300s are going to be wide ratio trannys, which are not perfect for a snowbike application so I think you are 2 years out to get the injected 300xc..

That being said, I loved mine it just ended up being more work than I wanted converting over yearly (I have a dedicated Husky 490 build as well). It would be better with an FI 300 as the biggest pain was the carb and carb heat having to switch.

Check BRC Racing. Ryley Will is a 2T genius and builds some great cart racing stuff. They are putting out a 500cc cylinder for the KTM300 (carbed). There are a couple of guys R & Ding EFI for the 500 jug as we speak. That is the way I am going next. There will be a modern 500 cylinder with power-valve and counter balancer. You will have a modern KTM frame and electronics, and a transmission you can get parts for. Best of all worlds.
