RER not working. Why?

So Im considering buying an 08 XP 800 but the RER is said to only work intermitently. What would cause this?

Seller says when the button is pressed the motor will slow down but then idle back up and still be in forward.

Any ideas?

The sled is suppose to stop and start in the opposite direction...this is a timing thing...there are guys who will chime in that know for sure....good luck.

Does the reverse beeper and everything start beeping? If not it sounds like an ecm issue.

Has the timing been altered on this unit? Adjusting the timing is how the motor reverses direction so if there have been changes made maybe this could be the problem.

I dont know about the timing. Ill have to ask.

I dont believe there are many components to the Ski Doo RER right? Could it be costly to fix would be my biggest concern?

Ok so....No mods....No timing alterations.....and no beeping when the button is pushed.

Ideas?

there is probably a second ignition coil in the magneto that is gone.

the rer switch itself is a weak point in the system(they often break).... If it works intermittantly, might be a place to start looking, also there is an rer relay/beeper that might be weak..... If someone has another xp or rev, i would probably try and swap that and see if it works.

there are 2 pickup coils. one could be shot.

ecm, rer button, like mentioned.

if the pickup coil for reverse was shot it would stall everytime you push the button I would be looking at the connector pins for ecm and check relay

not necessarily, if the computer gets a bad input from the pickup it will revert back to forwards.

but yes obviously check everything else possible before tearing into the motor.

yes unless its the ecm those arent cheap

Hey Maxwell,

You seem to know a lot about the XP's so Ill direct this at you.

Worst case senario what do you think it would cost?

The sled is resonably priced but if its going to be a grand or more to fix then its not really worth it.

worst case scenario is getting a used ECM and key off ebay for 200$

or...

reflash at the dealer for about 100$ which may possibly work.

the rest is just minor parts like switches and relays that you could try testing or replacing for free or very chaep.

the most expensive part NEW would be the ecm 500$

even the pickup coils for both are only 140$

So this is what the guy say the sled is doing.

"when you press the rer the engine drops to 400 rpm then 800 ,400, 800 four times then returns to idle in forward."

RER not working. Why?
