Sticking throttle?!?

Hello all,
So on Sunday morning we were going for a nice family ride...
We pulled all the sleds outta the shop and let them warm up. Shut em down and got geared up. Jumped back on the sleds and were gonna head out of the farm yard out to play in the meadows.
My dad bought a 2010 xp 10 days prior and this would have been his 4th ride on it.
He rode 50feet from the shop and was turning the corner to head down the hill.
The sled opened right up and drove him straight through the fence and into a poplar tree and down the hill. The distance traveled was 15 feet he tried to bail but couldn't get off in time. STARS flew him out because of previous head injuries. He is now recovering in the hospital with a shattered arm and lotsa bumps and bruises. VERY LUCKY and thank fawk for helmets.!!

Long story short any ideas on why this happened and how does one prevent this ?!? Tach reads 6800 and speedo is 55km/hr.

wow....wishing your pa a speedy recovery, that is scary man.

did he turn left or right when it opened up? could the cable possibly tightened up if he was turning right? being it was the fourth ride one would think if it was a cable routing issue it may have shown itself previously. doesn't make sense that he turned and pinned the throttle himself

Wows that's brutal. Hope he recovers well. Hard to guess but with bad circumstances and timing of cold hot cold conditions and with this fine snow we have a very good chance of a frozen throttle but why would the TORS not overide it???

wow, not the way to start off a new year. looks like the ride from hell, hope he makes a full recovey. sounds like the throttle cable jamed

Thanks man ya it was intense.
He would've been turning right but wasn't quite to the corner yet. The tracks went straight.
All he remembers was it opening up and trying to bail.

it happens friggin fast, he's lucky to be alive. everytime i start the sled in the fall and the firtst run it scares the crap outta me, they have some badass acceleration. looks like an insurance claim.

Ya it happens fast for sure and he is lucky to be alive. His helmet is trashed. He went through 7hrs of surgery on his elbow and fore arm yesterday. Hopefully he regains full use of his arm, but could always be worse.
The sled itself is oddly still straight some plastic and electronics and a tunnel is all it needs. I'm gonna fix it and hope he rides it next year!!

Just picked him up from the hospital.
23 screws, 4 plates and a roll of wire.
That ought-a slow him down for a while.

Is there a left hand throttle. I had a similar problem; when i turned hard left my right hand engaged the left throttle plate that was connected to my right throttle.

no chit....my bud has one on his dragon, he's in his 50's. never uses it, I'm going to rip that thing off his sled and chuck it in the trash.

It's kinda funny now because I took the one off my wife's sled a few weeks ago and threw it out. Then by brother in law and my dad have been bugging her saying they will sell theirs to her.
Hmmm now they are all in the garbage and at least we can laugh about it!!

I've seen more sleds in the trees with those lefty thottles than I've seen people who use them on purpose?

a bunch of years back there was a dude in clemina parking lot (I think it was) that was loading into an enclosed and grabbed the lefty instead of the brake. it was ugly, he was messed up bad

Again in 08 (first ride of my new 09) in the clemina parking lot we were parked next to a guy who was loading on an open trailer, he didn't have the pin in though he was grabbing break but pinned it. Launched it over the trailer and into the tailgate, but a big dent in that, rolled off the side of the trailer and almost smashed into my brothers truck but missed it by inches.

They are the most dangerous add on you can put on a sled. Bar none. Sorry to hear about your Dad Devon. Hope he is feeling better.

Well.. I took the xp for the first ride today since the rebuild and it took me for a ride. Must have a fray in the throttle cable I am gonna change it out and run er on the chain hoist next time!
What causes this to happen. The sled doesn't even have 1200km on it. Or is it just one of those freak incidents. I put more km a year than that on my sleds and have never had an issue.

Hmmm now that I think about it more might be a carb because the cable itself was springing back. I had to flip it a few times before it would idle back down ?

Its not uncommon for the cable to fray on those models. Usually down by the oil pump. It could be a carb issue but I'd look down low first. Ugly job to replace those. Some shops have charged as much as 4 hours I've heard. You will need to get a dealer to reset the TPS as well when you replace it.
