Im looking at a 2016 xm with about 1600 miles on it. The owner said it has a new engine covered under warranty because it was a bad fuel pump and would create a lean condition at high elevation and burned the engine down. He said thats what caused it and new engine and fuel pump now. Does that make sense? Thanks

You can always confirm with his paperwork or go to dealer with him and they will tell you whats been done on warranty.
Not a big deal......Really.

He has paperwork for the engine but does it make sense that would create a lean condition? Thanks

If it has a new engine installed at dealer it will have a year warranty as well .
New engine or just top end as with a lean condition it should have only been top end ?
Unless it put a chunk through the cases ?

A lean condition on the etec doesn’t necessarily trigger the detonation sensor to go off and put the sled in a limp mode.

that said the computer should sense a loss of fuel pressure and throw a code.

the only other thing that could happen is the screen filters in the injector itself plug up which would cause a lean condition, in this situation the computer would not sense anything.

what the owner is stating potentially could make sense given the following information. These motors run at 13.5:1 air/fuel ratio, any loss in fuel will cause a lean condition. Normally these situations happen at a high elevation mostly because you as a rider are demanding large amounts of throttle input.
