Use a small screwdriver and cover up the crankcase openings.

Using a small screwdriver you shouldn’t have to force it. Most pistons have a notch you can put the blade in so you won’t touch the outer surface. If you are really worried tape the blade.

Anyone have a piston cir clip installation tool by chance?

You can use a deep socket. You need to find one of exact size and that is pretty tough to do so what i do is find one slightly bigger and cut it down on the lathe to fit "snugly" into the pin hole. Now you can put the circlip at the end and basically push it into place.
I guess you could use round stock but a socket is easier to find LOL.
I have a few of different sizes now for different motors.

Oh don't be a weenie......do it by hand and play the "where the fawk did that go?" game when your oil soaked hands let it get away from you like the rest of us.....LOL!!!

There’s a circlip somewhere in my basement from about 5 years ago... still has not been found.

If you scratch the side of the piston just take some light sand paper and smooth it off. But I doubt you’d even scratch it maybe rub off the coating that’s all.

It was interesting when I rebuilt my 800 razor engine because both pistons compress at the same time they cut the sides of the pistons to get at the pin and circlip easy never seen that before but then it is the first engine that i worked on with that setup
