High Boost drivetrain modifications

Recently took out a chain on my Race gas 800XM turbo. its not the chain that i have a problem with replacing its that it took out both side of the chaincase, oil tank, some lines and wiring etc. made a real mess.

looking to strengthen up my drivetrain as its become aparent that running way more HP means things fail even more catastrophically. who knew! LOL!. im new to this

my question iss......

1. is there a stronger chain and gear option?

2. Belt drives? i honestly dont think they can handle the power but i could be wrong!? even if they cant..... replacing a belt is better than replacing your entire drive train like im having too.

3. i had a snowcross friend ask me why i wasnt running a slipper gear....did some research and looks like a cool option!! designed for the snowcross sleds the bottom gear has sort of a slip clutch in it so that under hard loads/impacts the bottom gear slips a little bit instead of grenading the chain. Looks like the best option to me and it is available in 49 tooth right from skidoo race department. wonder if it can handle the HP?

4. driveshaft mods....would like to fix this before i twist another shaft........is there an aftermarket alternative. i may just get the ends plug welded but that wont help the twisting just the seperation.

Seen a few C3 gear drives on big hp 4 strokes years back. Seemed to work well.

They run Jessel belt drives on big power V8s all the time, I would think something could be designed to hold the power but the tension and such has to be bang on. might not wreck as much on failure... look at the 2013+ PRO quick drive, they littered the hills for years with belts and didn't break anything but wallets lol

I've got an xm with tki belt drive - 8lbs boost pushing well over 200hp - the belt is probably gonna outlast the motor

Tom at TKI has belt drive kits on some 300 HP Cats. No problem.

If you need tips on power to the ground... I would suggest give carl kuster a shout. He loves to talk about his mod sled ;)… Maybe Vinnie in Valemount would give you a tip or two for the drive system ;)

How many days on that chain that failed. Was it the stock 13 wide chain.


yep factory chain. Not sure exactly but its the origional chain probably a couple thousand KM on it. only 1000 boosted if that. i know it will happen again the way we beat these machines on the race course

I don't know if the belt drive can handle a hard lock up of the brakes after hard throttle - I've heard it can shred the belt cogs off or wreck a sprocket

I would see if you can get a 3/4 hyvo chain and sprockets, I use too brake 13 wide stuff with only 180NA power.

Never broke 3/4 stuff at 250hp.

Hyvo chain will work and you can get parts for them. Recreation supply sells this style of chain and the sprockets. I think there more efficient that the stock “silent” style skidoo chain.

There are a few outfits offering 300m jack / driveshafts. Heck, I’ve had one or two built by machine shops in the past. Belt drive is tough, and will handle shock loading to a certain extent - I’ve ran them on boosted and big bore sleds for years. Hyvo is about the best chain you can get if you’re gonna stick with a chain case.

I`m running a TKI belt drive on my 2015 800 175" 3" geared 2.33:1 running almost 8 psi on a impulse turbo kit.
I have had the same belt on the belt drive for 4 seasons now with almost 4000km on the belt and it looks pretty much like
new. Belt has held up well when i switched to a 175 track this year (174 was toast after 4 seasons) I found my drive shaft slightly
crushed in when i went to swap drivers. It was caused by one of the drivers trying to spin on the shaft surprisingly the shaft was
still running true when checked with a dial indicator. Either way i installed a new drive shaft this year with the avid drivers. New drive shaft
still looks good after a season but avid drivers are wider so hopefully they will spread the load across the drive shaft better than the
stock drivers were

Maxwell, i know your going to get a lot of opinion's on this and a lot of them are credible and good.
But, your dilemma is not uncommon. I have built many big HP sleds and most exceeded what a 2 stroke turbo can ever make as a recreational sled.
Simply replacing your BRP chain and gears with a Hyvo chain and gear set will resolve your issue, i've ran well over 300hp and torque numbers exceeding 200ftlbs through these with very few gear and chain failures.
The difference is in the manufacturing of not just the chain but the gears. BRP and Arctic Cat both use a process of compressing metal powder at an extreme pressure. The reason is because its cheap and can be done in mass production. This ok for normal to light application but under severe use the gears will wear and the teeth become unproportional causing the chain to bind and eventually break.
Hyvo gears are milled out of a billet and generally go through a tempering process. Expensive but tough. You can also get custom made Hyvo chains for your ratio.
