Hello everyone,
I just picked up a 96 MXZ 583 and I don't know much about the rotax engines. So I have noticed that the sled has been really smoky even after warm up..the side of the sled at the exhaust port is black and it seems to be sluggish...from what I have read these sleds should reach over 100Km/H no problem but mine has a struggle and takes a bit to get there.the sled starts no problem and idles around 1800 rpm. It has fresh gas in it. I took a part the carbs and looked to make sure they were clean.. don't know what the factory settings are for the carbs. Cleaned the rave valves they were caked, again don't know the factory settings for the raves ..looked at the plugs they are fairly black...any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

There could be numerous reasons why the sled isn't performing. From carb. setting's and jetting to clutch issues, dirty or worn.
But if your finding that the motor is eating oil excessively and smokes constantly and your oil injector pump is properly set up, it is most likely the rotary valve drive gear seal. Its located on the inside of the rotary valve and when it leaks the oil will pass into the intake and cause excessive smoke. These rotax motors were very well know to do that.

If I were you I would give Deano a call at mad Motorsports in Leduc. He know those motors inside and out!

rebuild and clean carbs, make sure proper jetting and air screw settings are set. Check compression, check oil pump setting for the smoke issue, could also be center crank seals, take clutches apart, clean and inspect, most like ly need new springs, probably pins, rollers and bushings too. the 583 is usually bullet proof, so it's probably going to be just a tune up.
