Just picked up a 98 583 before winter. When I got it, it worked fine but the clutch engaged around 5000 rpm. I put a few hundred miles on it. After going up a big hill the clutch started slipping really bad at low speed. I put a new belt on and that helped somewhat, but it feels like it slips on takeoff below about 6000 rpm and at steady speeds below about 30 mph it feels like it's slipping. Under hard acceleration it doesn't seem to slip at all. I rode it about 100 miles with the new belt and it didn't seem to get any worse, but I'm sure the belt was wearing much faster than it should. I'm not sure if the weights and springs are stock, and ideally I want the clutches to engage around 3600 which I've heard is stock.

Stock clutch engagement is 4400 rpm for that sled. Sounds like your secondary spring is getting weak.
