2004 800X Fast idle..

Have a really high idle on my 04 800. if I choke it, it'll idle great, and the Mag side is running 100* hotter at anything above idle. I'm thinking Vac Leak... are there any spots to start looking? I'm doing reeds soon, and I heard the carb boots are usually suspect...where else to look?

Check your carb boots. Possible cracking/deteriorated boots. And I will bet its on your lean side

Also a somewhat pouted pilot jet will lean it at idle

Well the carb boots were scary deteriorated. They were original I think. Put the Boysens on, idles @2200-2500 now...
Cleaned Carbs, weren't scummy or dirty
Still is 100* higher on RH (or 100 degrees lower on left!)
Starts fine, runs great, pulls hard...What temp should I be getting worried at?

My 07 800R did the same thing when sitting the idle creep was getting so high the clutch was almost engaging and by flipping the choke would drop it down but it would creep back up but the thing would run fine all day. Took it Martin thinking was bad crank seal PSI good both side did a leak down test and failed horribly out came the engine, piston a walls scored all to hell was probably minutes/KM's from a blow up. Turns out a reed petal broke off and went through the engine.
I learned the choke flipping thing from Freakshow his 04 800 was doing the same with the idle creep pulled hard all day just couldn't stop had to shut it off. Then 8'oclock at night 40KM back to the cabin in the sask bush she went BOOM good thing she was flat for towing

check your pilots.... I had to go from the stock 17.5's to 20's...... after I rebuilt the engine and the same things you have all described....

Yes, you can check the fuel screws. But, usually if at the stock setting, you will require the bigger pilots. Not enough range on them to correct the high idle issue. This was a very well known topic on dootalk.

My 2005 800 Summitt X had the same problem it was the lean side of the carb boots they were delaminating. The rubber coating was pealing away from the plastic body causing air leaks to the carbs. Replaced for 185.00 Cdn now runs great.

x2. Mine does this at lower elevations with the stock jetting before and after I installed new reeds and boots. I'm not worried about it but next time I have the carbs out, it will be getting 20's put in the mains.
