Just put a used oil pump in my sled to replace one that was leaking. Brp says I have to hook it to buds to program it in. Can anyone give a definitive answer on what will happen if I don't? Friggin dealer wouldn't squeeze me in for this 5-10 minute job so I could ride this weekend. Will my calibration just be a bit off? These things are so rich that I think it's safe either way? Number on the old pump was 7, this one is 5

Personally I wouldn't chance it deaner. Those numbers mean something to BUD's and not meant as any kind of rate of flow.

from my understanding each oil pump is tested at the factor. They are testing the flow of the pump. The number dictates the flow, there is a difference. So one pump may be a 6 because it flows the amount of oil require at that number. Some are less, some are more.

ultimately I would play safe off the start. Pre-mix tour fuel for the first ride, and monitor your oil tank consumption. If it looks correct then your done. If it’s off well then you need to adjust it and you didn’t loose a motor.

The higher the number the lower the amount of oil. I installed a Redline turbo on my 850 and part of the set up was taking it to the dealer and having the oil pump set at 2. It uses about 1/3 rd of the oil reservior to a full tank of fuel. If it were me I think I would ride it, maybe try to get all the lines full of oil with a syringe.

You can set the oil pump number with CanDoo

It doesn’t do everything buds does. You can’t do things like pair injectors, gauges or change ECUs but you can set raves, timing, oil pump, TPS, etc.

I tried three different dealers and brp themselves and couldn't get a straight answer on this. Every time it was just an ambiguous answer about how I better get it to a dealer or not ride it. Wish they could at least give a straight answer on what will happen if I run a 5 oil pump in place of a 7. A couple of them even alluded that there was no linear relationship as you suggested.

Oh well it's done. I'm done complaining! Thanks for the feedback

If I recall it does have to do with oil flow amount, lots of vehicle things are flow coded like trans and injectors

So would think it's needs calibrated to know the amount of oil flow so it's not over or under oiling

Not sure if 1or 10 is high lol

Oil pumps are rated 1-10, one being lowest flow ten being highest. Buds is matched to the pump number so you will get the same oil flow. If you have a "1" pump buds will compensate by pumping more oil, if you have a "10" it will compensate by pumping less oil.

On my sled I have a "5" pump and I have it set to "2" so it tricks buds into pumping more oil for my turbo set up. I had to force my dealer to change the pump number in buds, it ended with "I don't care what you think, change the f-kn thing to 2..."

I would not run your sled that's programmed for a "7" with a "5" pump, it will be pumping less oil than you need.

I had the same run around with my local dealer twice. First time was with my old 800 Etec turbo. I did a rebuild and I was told to have the break-in reset and since it was a turbo sled have the pump turned up. I had the service manual so I knew how to increase the oil consumption. The tech had no clue and tried to tell me the higher the number the more oil! That turned into a pretty heated debate! In the end someone brought out the service manual and he set the pump to #1.

Fast forward to the beginning of this season and I took my new 850 sled in for a recall, I knew I was going to start my turbo install soon so I wanted the oil pump set to #2 right away. I got the riot act from service manager that it was not recommended to turn the oil up and I was going to damage my engine. That one ended with a simple, “turn the damn thing up, I know what I’m doing!"

The E TEC electronic oil pumps are 3D mapped, if you have high rpm & low throttle position such as boosted oil delivery is increased.
