Soooo... with Snowcheck season almost upon us, just curious as to how many mountain Km's people have run and WOULD run on their G4 850's? Knock on wood, we've been lucky with ours however my '18 175 is around the 4,000 mark but still has a year warranty on it. Warranty is nice but still doesn't help if broke down deep in the hills. Any recommendations e.g. pistons and rings at a certain point if I do keep it? At what # of km's is a clutch rebuild needed? Just starting to consider options so any input is welcome!

I’d be lucky to put 500km on a year........technically you shouldn’t have to rebuild it until 6000km. That’s what one dealer told me. Heck my 13 has about 3700km and it’s still got great compression. I honestly wouldn’t worry about the engines on the new doo’s

I would go 5000km on the top end no problem before a refresh. I would be looking at a full teardown and crank inspection at 7500km.

as for clutching you really should be opening both of them up and replacing both springs every 2000-2500km. The new P drive is relatively maintenance free but the spring does need to be replaced and you should inspect the rollers.

as for the secondary, same deal, new spring and inspect the secondary rollers. They have been known to fail so i would recommend chaning them anyways while its apart.

it makes a big difference even replacing with factory springs. They get worn out from so many cycles.

at 4000-5000km i would be replacing that chain aswell. 120$ but its about 1500$ when it blows and does major damage

they certainly can, seen it myself! Sometimes being proactive is cheaper than being reactive however.

Yup a top end is probably cheaper then a chopper ride, and less of a pain in the azz. Plus changing out pistons is better then waiting till it blows, then usually it’s new jugs at a minimum.

getting over 4000km things start to get expensive from my experience, better to sell it and move on. 4000km with a year of warranty should sell decently as the next guy has a bit of a safety net with the warranty remaining.

My XM made it to 3200 miles and then my motor went south a little over a year ago, had it rebuilt and will keep riding it until I decide to get a newer one, when I do i'll be keeping this one as a spare.

As a person that had a dealership and worked in sales at a dealership. Not a lot of demand for 4000km sleds. Its a mountain thing it seems as lots of real high milers down east that seem to last forever.

I think people don’t understand that the machines a few years old aren’t worth what they are asking .
It’s back to $5000 for first year and then drops off from that .
A 2015-16 with 3500 -4000 kms is a $5000 -$5500 dollar sled as it needs shocks rebuilt , clutch’s rebuilt , bushings in suspension , high fax , track , bearing’s and possible top end .
A reason why dealers don’t want trades as they know what they are worth ?!!! Lol
Parts are expensive on these new sleds .

You got it figured out. The average consumer doesn't get it. They don't understand that when you take a sled in on trade you have to put it through the shop, detail it, advertise it and make money selling it. Anything that goes through your store you should make money on. If you don't you won't pay your bills, salaries and build your business. Most peeps that buy a sled would never work for free but expect the dealer to. Just my opinion after 45 years in the business.

Yep...the rules and expectations for a dealership are completely different then when buying on Kijiji. Everything needs to have a reasonable profit.
To keep your dealership open you have to support both new sled purchases and parts purchases.

And your right on kms as you head east. Even as close as Saskatchewan...
My nephew has an XM with 9,000km
+\- that had the rings changed at 6k and basic maintaining and he he figure he still has 5k before the motor goes.
