So just curious about everyone's thought with doo's gearing changes over the past 3 years......

Pretty sure my/the 2017 Summit X 154 came with 19/45 (2.36), I never had it apart to verify....163's had 21/51?
Then Changed with the 2018 Updates to 21/53 (2.52)
Now in my 2019 Summit X 154 it was back to a 21/51 (2.42)...... Recently added syncro drive and stayed with 2.42.....

Gearing down, higher ratio # is not a bad thing. Especially if the stock clutching is used.

The setup question is, what am I going to see for sheave ratio for my riding conditions.
In retrospect a rider doesn’t not need a sled geared for 65mph if he rides deep snow all the time.

Kanedog 2015-2019, thanks for the good times S&M!
All current mountain sled gear ratios except Yamaha turbos, should be increased by 1. Example-2.36 should be 3.36.
Example-2019 Doo g4-21/53(2.53) 7 tooth drivers(x88.5%=2.83)= 99kmh(62mph) at 1-1.
116kmh(73mph) at ovedrive(fully shifted out).

G4 with 3.56(25/80 belt drive) is 82kmh@1-1, 96kmh at overdrive. Now that 82kmh is much more realistic, provides a ton more traction and more throttle response.

No mountain sled NA will be turning 99kmh on a good chew at 1-1 which is where the most efficiency is as stated by the Olav Aaen.
Now if someone can get a sled to run @1-1 at say 82 kmh, now ya got something. Turbos will run away scared and you have stock reliability but no expensive motor mods.

I didn't answer your question but if it was me, I would do a 19/53 114 chain(24 or 25/66 belt drive) if mountain riding. Clutch temps will decrease dramatically and your friends will ask wtf did you do to your sled. I did a 19/51 gear change and clutch temps went from 220 to 190 so the 19/53 should be better. Max speed is 102kmh though. Any higher speed and you will blow a belt as it hits bolt heads in the secdy clutch. Be prepared for naysayers and doubters. Best $400 spent on a g4, hands down.

kanedog sounds crazy... but he could be on to something. Im going to try it and see what happens

No I dont think he is, I also believe he’s on the right track. Ive been thinking about that for awhile, just never came across someone who went that extreme on the gearing.

Maybe he is just messing with people. Probably sitting in his kanedog lair laughing boisterously at the thought of some people actually taking his advice, gearing their sleds unbelievably low, and then getting to the backcountry and realizing that their sled now sucks.

Either that or he's on to something.

I geared my 15 T3 163, down 2 teeth. Off the top gear. Best 20$ I ever spent on that sled, it ripped way harder after that.
(2 teeth on the top gear is a big difference ie going from 21 to 19tooth.)

I personally wouldn't have geared it down any more than that though, some times you need some speed.

did u change anything on the '17?

Just suspension. Never did any clutching, gearing or motor work. I left a lot on the table with that sled.

Might do a few things to it this season though, now that its got a fresh motor.

I'm in the same group as lilduke. I prefer to gear up from stock. What track are you running?

Heehee. The funny thing is that I never thought I'd go so extreme either. Three years ago I started out at 2.3 and it kept getting better at each gear ratio all the way up to 3.48. When I started to beat Turbos is when I knew this is something special. There's more left in her which is crazy. This year will be a 3.56 and a 3.66.
If I was beating 850 Doos just by a sled length or two it wouldn't be a big deal but I pass them like they aren't even in the picture. Its that crazy. Anyhoo, I'll report my findings this year. Cheers

2.72 worked well on the 174 before the turbo. I went up to 2.52 this year just to see.

2100kms on 19-53 gearing. Smoked 2 belts. I blew them up and i knew i was overheating them, being a pow-hog, not letting anyone get ahead of me going up these creeks treeriding.

I looooove the throttle control having no surging when doing wrong foot forward. Very smooth and when I want a burst of track speed...whammo, 70kmh (42mph) right fkin now! he he he. :d

When coming down some hills doing w.f.f. on the throttle side, sometimes I just can't grab the brake (uncoordinated) and rather, give the throttle a flick to engage the clutches for engine braking and slows me right down. Most strong engine braking with 19-53.

if you have the 21 top gear and you want to drop to a 19, do you need a new chain?

I just switched my 19 154 to the 19 driver and 53 driven and was able to utilize the stock chain length if that helps.
