We get it you got a lemon, it was a POS and BRP should likely do something to make the situation right but to come on here and see you jump all over every negative point about the G4 day in and day out frankly gets old after the first couple of months.

If you have a better solution, by all means post it. I have seen that when buyers speak by spending elsewhere, companies take notice very quickly.

When BRP stops "looking into" issues and starts to actually "apply fixes" without extra billing consumers I'll stop, until then I suggest passing over my posts if they upset you so much.

Answer the two questions-

Why are belts blowing?


- Those that are blowing have various issues, but in short the calibration is wrong.

- Fix any motor mount issues and correct the calibration.

Why are motors blowing?

- Same reasons any other two stroke would blow, because they had a problem and weren't working right.
- Broken oil hose?
- T-stat/Coolant Pump issue?
- Excessive Blown Belts?


Here is a question for you Kanedog. Why are 850s making it 14,200 km without any issues?

Nice post Fred!

BRP has a mountain test center in Grand Lake Colorado. What I find a shame is that you didn't get the support needed to lower the belt temps. That is one thing that BRP needs to change, and I have listed suggestions. After a complete season and I don't know how many belts, obviously you would be left with the only possible conclusion that the the clutch was not tested adequately and cannot be made to work in the mountains. That is the part imo that BRP should address ASAP with a better communiqué to come clean.
Not sure if you are aware but that facility is no longer operating. They now do satellite testing through dealers at high altitude 9000-13000 and have built a facility at CKMP in Malakwa for their mountain testing home base. My good friend Chris Ruske was given a retirement package.

And Maxwell has recognized that there is a clutching issue that requires BRP's fix and a wobble wobble is a bad idea. Miraculous! There is hope for him! lol

I may rest my bashing stick in the corner for a while!

This photo is similar to the clutch in the video that was released on another forum or thread on this site. The key here is looking at this pattern everyday when you do your pre-ride inspection. I have a a G4 850 165 3" Summit X that gets rode pretty hard. My clutch "belt print" is perfectly symmetrical, unlike the one in this picture. I have never blown a belt, belt color is good and I absolutely love this machine.
I religiously go over my sled everyday before we head out into the back country. I inspect belt for cords, check / adjust belt deflection, look at clutch faces for signs of change in pattern or height of pattern on both clutches, signs of heat, adjust chain tension, add oil, fill muff pot, blah, blah. Out of the 9 G4 sleds in the group of people I ride with through the winter none of us have blown a belt and none of our clutches look like the one kanedog posted. Interesting. As i said in the other thread...look at this every day....if it changes you should probably figure out whats wrong.
Some people claim they have blown them early or repeatedly. What does the pattern on the those clutches look like? It would be interesting to see how many actually look like the attached pic vs what we see in the G4 sleds i have looked at.

Here are 2 sheaves from a P drive. Note where the rubber marks are. Normal slippage the marks would be a complete 360 degree circle. This clutch is not normal. This is belt slippage which also causes maje heat.

Great to hear....have any of your group removed the felt or cut belt guard....added any venting in your G4's?

3 of the nine are stock SP 165 3" with all factory foam and sound deadening in place except on the guard. 1 SP and 4 X 165 3" with varying amounts of foam removed, sound deadening removed and clutch cover mod. Mine has all foam and sound deadening material removed with Diamond S mesh hood, Diamond S intake and Diamond S titanium can with no cut on the guard. Pretty good mix with no issues so far, combined well over 11,000 km.
And yes I know I am cheating with the huge Diamond S mesh hood vent. Don't even start!

Oh? Where is it now Dave? I was told they were stocking Chris's old trailer and parking it at a dealers compound to be pulled wherever they wanted to test when the engineers were wanting to?

I have around 1350km on my 850 this year and my opinion would be very similar. Easily the most fun stock sled I have ever rode. Still impresses me every time out. So easy to handle after the first couple days. Took some getting used to for sure though. Your spot on about the not being able to ride wrong foot forward and having to get back to neutral position after a hard move either direction.
First belt went at 560km
Second exploded at 1040

And now at 1350 the one on the sled is starting to pull a cord. So not impressive belt life at all. That said have rode side by side with a buddy on his 2015 XM (not a t3) and he has blown belts at the exact same time as me. Like within 5km. And these sleds have the exact same km on them, rode all the same lines and all. So maybe we are just a little too abusive. My 14 XM and 12 pro both liked to eat belts too.

Cords pulled out of belt on weekend. Belt had 300 easy km riding with the kids and about 300km of hard riding.
Lousy belt life - wear was equal on both sides.

Luckily I have a great dealer and they said bring it in for an exchange!
Just need the cause solved by BRP on their thread for suggested fix and not everyone's suggestions.

I talked to the product specialist that worked the Spring Fever stop in Calgary last night snochuk. He said that once they have finalized everything for the 2018 Summits to where they are happy they will then release a bulletin on the 17's to address them to the consumers. I think with it being late in the season now I personally think we won't see that bulletin to the dealers in time to help anyone this year. They are asking dealers to re submit claims on belts that were denied earlier in the season so that they can re evaluate them. He was very sympathetic to our concerns and said BRP would be doing something for you guys having issues. And it was a strange night in that not one person asked me about the belt issue's this year??? They told us before the show we may have some customers grill us on this and how to explain the new changes for 2018 and how they will be addressing them but not one person asked me? I offered the info but no one really cared? It was a Doolaide drunk group last night I guess? Lol.
