yes the prep is very important make a good effort to stop the crack also if you weld over the end of the crack it may still keep on cracking maybe you could drill a small hole at the end of the crack make sure to get all of the crack or just grind it out if you can get at it my 2 cents

you only need to move the skid to make up for the longer track if you dont use the extensions
