Mix a can of Premium (No Ethanol) and 111. (You asume you did this, but...) When you do your plug check make sure you kill the motor with the throttle wide open WFO, 3 seconds of idle and the read tells you nothing.

If the stat is closed it wont mater if the fan is turning because you have no-flow through the rad. The 5.9 will not make heat at idle, you need 1100 - 1200 rpm minimum and even then with no engine load its slow to build. An easy quick check for your stat, run truck for 15 mins on a high idle...
The EGRs are a well known problem and very much like you describe, can turn into a "very" expensive issue.I would have it gone through very carefully before jumping in.

Ethanol can cause alot trouble, First off it is Ethyl Alcohol which we found out back in the late 70s-early 80s it "Cleans". All the crap in the tank and fuel system break loose stop at the smallest point (not always the filter),ha,ha, it also attracts moisture and holds water in suspension...
Sometimes "Light" is too light.....and things break (shafts), another one let go today in Revy. I woud guess sadly for the owners this is just the begining.
