there was a discussion in the other thread about people riding out of bounds at Cataract Creek. This happens when they ride the Fording Pass into BC. I called the out of bounds guys ayeholes because I thought they were regulars and were knowingly riding out of bounds. It turns out that they may not have known where the boundaries are. I apologise for questioning thier charactor.

Others in that thread expressed some confusion as well. Here is the best information that I have. If I am wrong, can someone please post it here and provide the correct information.

1) in this image, the pink line is our GPS tracks for the day. You can see that we approach Mount Boulton from the east, circle around the south side and then go into the horseshoe shaped play area travelling allong the North side of Mount Boulton.

2) this image is from google earth and it shows the boundary between Alberta and BC. The faint blueish line is the border. Anything to the East of that line is out of bounds as that is the Don Getty Wildland Provincial Park. The Government has allowed us to use a trail in the park to access the Fording Pass into BC and there are a number of signs that clearly state we are not to go off the trail.

this image is a mark-up of the google earth image. I traced the Alberta / BC border in black. The red line is the common trail used to access the Fording Pass and is the only place you can legally ride. The violet colored circle is the mountain face that many people take a poke at while going to the Pass. It is clearly East of the border and is part of the Don Getty Wildlife Park. It is out of bounds.

The green dot is where we saw the group highmarking on Saturday. It is also clearly in the park and is out of bounds.

Thanks for your info Mike on this.

When you said you cant ride the back side i was thinking the west side of your black line(alberta bc boarder) Where the red trail is on bc side.So everything on the west side of the black line you can ride correct???Clearly you can Not ride where you made the two colored marks but to the people that dont know this should clear it up.

I can see that being an easy mistake to make.
Using a GPS would be the only way to accurately check where you are.

Good to know as we not only have to do the right thing but be seen doing the right thing. Image is everything in the battle for the right to ride.

as far as I know, everything west of the black line (border) is open. You are only limited by your common sense.

Supporting documents would include this find:

I've taken the gov't map and 'guessed' where the boundaries would end up on Google Earth.

Don Getty Government Map.jpg

This is a guess of how it looks in Google Earth:

The Don Getty area is quite extensive. The way it looks, any 'off trail' riding in the region is questionable....till you cross into BC.

...that's the way I would interpret it.

So for an easy way to define it: until you completely cross all of the rocky sections you should consider yourself in Alberta and 'on trail' only.

Excellent information guys.;)

I scrolled throught the PDF document MOOSE supplied for a few minutes, couldn't help but notice that after 11 pages of legal land description jargin, right to the "Thirtyninethly" parcel description, the last three words in the document are "more or less"!

Albeit has to be done, how'd you like to have that job every day?:(

The BC side is an AMA (Access Management Area) and the dates for access are posted, in all things, the Hunting Synopsis. So if one isn't a hunter, one has a hard time getting these dates. I will try and find the dates for that particular AMA and post them. Not all AMA's have winter closures and the closures are the same dates.

Maybe this thread should be a sticky. Cataract Creek opens on Dec 1 and Dec 10 is the first group to post pictures sledding in an out of bounds area. If we aren't careflu, we will lose the Fording Pass trail.

ferniesnow, would you have any information on the AMA on the B.C. side of the Fording Pass for this snowmobiling season? Thanks in advance, Kaz Dog
