If anyone is interested, let me know. I was thinking of Golden at first, but after I heard about all of the recent breakins I have changed my mind a bit. If Cataract Creek has decent snow, I'd like to go there. Anyone know the latest conditions?

EDIT: I will probably be going down there tomorrow to break in the new sled. If anyone wants to come along, give me a call tonight @ 403-934-9545, I'd really like another person to ride with.

little thin at Etherington Creek staging area. the closer you get to the divide the better the snow gets. I figure that there is about a foot and a half further west. Trail riding is not bad. Couple of area's with enough snow to play in. The further West and South you go the better it gets, Mind you it is a little thin at the Oldman River

I put on 50 miles out there today went all the way to the Old man river. Tried to find the Silver mine but the terrain changed in the last 10 years and could'nt find where the trail starts. Need some help there.

I would love to go sledding again tomorrow but Its a Family day for me

Should be a number of guys unloading at Etherington. I went solo today and tagged along with a couple of guys I met in the parking lot. Worked well.

Thanks for the info tasco. Yeah I went out there Sunday and it was pretty thin snow for a while. I was out solo for a bit and couldnt find anywhere decent to go until I ran into a couple other guys that showed me some other stuff up high. Only did about 40 km though. I'd really like to go out again sometime when theres a bit more snow. Think it'd be possible for us to take a run out there sometime together? I'd like to see these areas you found with some snow to play in. I can't do it this weekend, but maybe one after that? Let me know what you think.

Sounds like a plan. I don't think that I will be able to go out till after Christmas.

I will upload the rabbit trail that my Gps made. If you have a Garmin you should be able to upload it into your Gps or into Mapsource the maping software that comes with it.

Don't even have a GPS myself : \ Should probably look into getting one.... As for going out after Christmas, same here, I might try and get one more ride in if possible.

Its not much of an update, but when I was there on the 16th, there was very little snow on the lower trails. Once I got up into the trees there was about 6" or so of powder that nobody had broken in yet, but as for younger kids riding on the trails down below, there really wasnt much snow at all. Lots of gravel poking through. Hopefully you guys get a decent dump before you take a ride out there on Boxing Day. If you do go, please update, I'd like to know what its like down there.

I took the kids out there yesterday. Ok amount of snow. A few rocks showing in spots. I would say half a foot to a foot and half further west. We just stayed to the north. That seemed ok. It was lightly snowing at one time. Bottom line is there is a enough snow for a ride. So if doesn't warm up a whole lot it should be ok for a while. So I would say boxing day would be a go!

I am from Red Deer and never been down there. The wife actually mentioned she wants to go for a ride with the kids. How does a guy get there from Calgary?

Directions from Calgary. Highway 2 South (Deerfoot Trail) Take the Okotoks turnoff (Hwy 2A). Stay on Hwy 2A through the town and follow to the last set of lights (Hwy 7, just past the Wall Mart). Highway 2A turns into hwy 783. Stay on 783 until you come to a stop sign and head West(Hwy 543). Follow to hwy 22 and turn left (South). Follow to Longview and head West on hwy 538 until you see the turn off for Etherington/Cataract. The highway closes just past this point. Stage at Etherington campground. Should take you about an hour once you leave Okotoks.

I think your best bet would be to come out of Calgary going West on the 22X. Turn South when you reach the 22 and go all the way South through Black Diamond till you are just before Longview. Then turn West again and take the 541 all the way West until you reach the road closure sign. At that point turn South again and just follow the signs. The Etherington Creek staging area is first down this road, then Cataract Creek one. Each will have signs showing where they are.

Or you could come out of Calgary South on the 2A, follow it through Okotoks, then go West when you reach the 7, then go South again once you reach Black Diamond on the 22.

Hope that helps,

Jim
