Another season coming up soon. Getting cooler out and the area already had a small dusting of snow. Its gone now but the seed was planted. The Calgary Snowmobile Club will be doing the trail work again out there this season. The new to us groomer worked great out there last year and it will be ready to go as soon as we get some snow to cover the rocks.
The club does need your help. We will be looking for trail helpers to do cleaning up and trail work as well as another helper to help groom trails on the snowmobile groomers this winter.
Trailpass sales are on right now and we need you all to please support the club and the area by purchasing a trailpass. These funds go directly back into the trails with grooming and maintenance of the trails as well as other trail related costs (fuel, insurance, repairs, etc).
Go to www.calgarysnowmobileclub.net and click join now to get your trailpass please. you can also donate on this site as well. simple PayPal system all good to go. Trailpass and club membership $100.00 up $10.00 from last year.

Thanks and get dancing for snow in November

Thanks to the recreation management guys at the Government we have 2 new bridges out at Cataract for this upcoming season. A new groomer width bridge on Oyster Trail that has been washed out since 2013 and a new 90 foot OHV bridge across Cataract Creek just West of the staging area. These new bridges will make it safer for all trail users to cross these creeks as well as being able to cross the creek with the big trail groomer.
Some good news for the upcoming meeting in October. Come on out and hear whats going on. We will be doing some trail work as soon as out OH&S program gets approved by the ggovernment. We will be needing some helpers for that.

Help out the area by buying a trailpass and membership.

I was out at Cataract Thursday helping build the new 90 foot bridge across Cataract creek. Area is getting snow up high and it is looking alot like fall. Mountains are pretty white up high and its working its way lower every day. lets hope for good snow to build a nice trail with and have some fun this season.

Pictures from Mark of the new bridge that went in over the Cataract creek. Thanks Mark for doing the job and Thanks to the Backcountry Flood team for supplying the bridge and paying to get it installed.

No pictures of the snow out there????

I'd post pictures but I would hate for anyone to know that there can be great riding before December 1 :)

December 1 is the Official opening day for the area. This has never been and issue 5-10 years ago but the last few years seem to be

I had someone ask the other day where this can be found, and so I looked, and I cannot find it and I am usually pretty good at finding stuff like that as I have always relayed the Dec 1 date. No PLUZ info, Cataract info, anything has that date on it.

Can you find/post an official link with that date on it? Or has it just been an agreed on date with the club?

I remember seeing it there last year on the Alberta Government page where the link to the maps are posted, but now I can't seem to find that page.

Thinking they must be in the process of editing. Only reference to dates I can find is to the open/closing of the snow gates on the map right now. Weird.View attachment CataractCreekPLUZ-SnowmobileMap-2016.pdf

Right, thats the trunk road gates for vehicle traffic, not snowmobile use.

Any trail work going on... we are here to help.

We had to put a complete OH&S program into the government this year before we can access the area. So we have plans but no dates. This has been another paperwork nightmare to the club wanting to improve the area. Dates will be coming soon.
Thanks for asking.

How old is that map (2011 map?) because when I last inquired about the two loops in Kananaskis I was told there is zero snowmobile use on Elbow loop and has been that way for several years.

To add to that when I went hiking up there this summer the park boundary sign explicitly says no OHV use. You can see on the rocks of the trail old scuff marks from carbides but there is no access to it as per the signs.

They completely closed the trail after the last flood but that closure was supposed to be temporary??
