    Nordegg ATV trail closures

Anyone who likes riding ATV,s or Sleds in the Nordegg area should be aware of the attempt to get the area reclassified as a Wildland Park. We dont have many details yet but I'm sure it will severely restrict ATV,s snowmobiles and random camping. There is a meeting on Wednesday April 27 at 7:30 in the Nordegg Community hall and we are trying to get enough support to stop this or at least limit it. If Wildland Park status for Nordegg isnt in your best intrest I would hope to see you wednesday.

Pretty sure trails are allowed in wildland parks. Best to go for sure always good to show our numbers and interested areas. Be positive and respectful at these meeting. As a friend tells me. Honey is better than vinegar. Be sweet and get your concerns across. Just might not be so bad

This is what I found on-line. Not my quote !

According to the vision statement for the Bighorm Wildland Park ALL motorized recreational activity would be banned.

    Vision

    • AWA is seeking Wildland Park protection for the Bighorn as was promised by the Alberta government in 1986.
    • Boundaries of the Bighorn Wildland Recreation Area, as delineated in 1986 by the government of Alberta, must be upheld, and the area protected under legislation as a Wildland Park.
    • No surface access for industrial development within the Wildland.
    • No motorized recreation within the Wildland.
    • In the adjacent transition zone the Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) and Critical Wildlife Zones must be placed under moratorium until proper assessment has been conducted to identify areas requiring protection. Surface disturbance must not be allowed within these areas.
    • Any industrial activities occurring within the transition zone must be conducted with the highest standard.

Funny this is on a week night 100's of km from the people who go there. I've called at least 20 people who are very concerned. Same answer. They are working. A few of ius are coming for sure. If it was on a Saturday I could bring dozens.

Me too at contacting people as they are busy.

Siffler Falls Wilderness, Ghost Wilderness and White Goat consume 248.000 acres of all 3 combined. If Big-Horn rec area and this Nordegg Wild lands is added to it, it adds another 400.000 ish give or take. Total land loss to Alberta with Coalman would be close to 1 million acers give or take as we add up the final numbers once the dust clears.

This could compress ohv/ snowmobiles areas even more from what I see.

    Hope I'm wrong !

Edited: One should remember that the above is a proposal of 1986 since much has changed over the years. Not much scenes over thinking things until we hear what they have to say at the Nordegg meeting.

Exactly why they did it that way. It's the politics of it.
