Hey, just wondering if anyone has tried riding out at the Sibbald Flats area, west of Calgary, this year. I was at Maclean Creek last week and it was rideable, but needs another foot.

Hi fullmont ,
I have never gone out to Sibbald or McLean Creek and was wondering where a person could get a map of the trails for these areas ? Is this area good for family riding ?

I rode at sibbald on boxing day. the snow is okay but it will need more snow. At the little Elbow is where the snow is. it has about the same as mclean. for the powderface if the weather gets to warm there maybe no snow left.
Lots of people are riding there just watch for rocks if you have to get the sliders wet off the trail.

Be careful if you go there dont ride in the little and big elbow loop till january 1st. They are giving tickets for being in there before this date.

For maps you can pick them up at the parks information booths in Kanaskis and the one by Mclean. The only trial i know of is the Powder face to the little Elbow and big Elbow loop. not very many trials to ride. All trails are family friendly. There is no shelters for keeping warm but there is a washroom.

If you want more info here is a website that shows the snow conditions for mclean and catarack creek. the phone number is there if you need more info.
Hope this works.

Hey everyone:
Thanks for all the replies. I drove out to the Sibbald Flats area a few days ago to check it out, but didn't find much more snow than what's in Calgary. Here's a link to a map of the Sibbald area. I'm not sure if these areas are still legal to ride in, however, because the only "staging area" I could find out there was at Dawson Equestrian parking lot, which is where the Powderface Trail winter closure starts. There is a sign there that states you must stay on the Trail. If there was another foot of snow, there would be some nice open areas to ride just off the Sibbald road.

You have to stage at sibbald creek off of Hwy 68. Ride the powderface south to the little Elbow and big Elbow loop. The powderface road to the Elbow loops is 41km or something like that.

So to get to Sibbald you drive west down hwy 1 and look for the Sibbald Creek trail sign turn right off the hwy then left and this road goes under hwy one. keep on this road till you get to the powder face trail sign turn left
The stageing is at Dawson equestrian day use area. I think that is what its called.

There is also a trial you can ride i think its west on the west fisher trail in Mclean, but dont quote me. I have never riden it before so im not to sure where it is. The information booth close to Mclean told me about it ithink they have maps for it. The only thing about this trial is you have to cross the Elbow river close to the Little Elbow somewhere.

Hope this helps.

Your welcome, I know the snow was getting thin on the powderface when i went boxing day. But u p in the little elbow campground it was 2 ft but maybe it has blown away. It does get windy in that pass. I thought maybe some of the snow we got in Calgary would of fallen there too, but i guess not.

This area has not had snow in the last 5 years that i can remember so it nice to ride that area when the snow is there.

The area is out of the question, very nice, there is enough snow in campground and lower areas
snow has blown out in some windy areas, you're right. I really liked to ride there
and nice to hear that this area got snow when I just bought my first sled and started first season.
