Kurts Gear down kit on 2013 Pro - can't get bottom sprocket off

Anybody else run the Kurt's 'turbo & 3" track' geardown kit on their 2013 Pro?

Anybody tried to ever take it off again??

After I bought it, I had done some research and realized that apparently the 2013 drive shaft spines that the cog slips on is slightly larger than the later years 2014+ (at least if my memory serves me correctly..) and some people experience a tight fit when sliding the bottom sprocket on. When I installed 2 years ago, I most certainly had this same experience, but with a little persuasion, managed to get it on.

I just bought a new driveshaft with drivers and 3" track, so tried taking the belt drive off tonight and what do ya know, the bottom sprocket won't come off! Not sure what the best method may be that isn't going to bend the sprocket since it's a lot more awkward to try and bang or pry off versus banging it on where you can hit it square in the centre with a Mallot. If anyone else has had success in getting a very tight gear off before, please let me know your tips!

I don't have any experience getting a stuck quick drive gear off,but have pulled some stuck sheave's from motor and blower shafts... sounds like you will be needed a puller... especially if you needed to "persuade" it on in the first place.

Got room to run a strap through it evenly distributing the force? Can't remember how much room there is behind the gear. Use a come-along lol

Usually you can heat the gear with a torch enough to expand it without expanding the shaft.

I thought about trying to hear only the gear with a heat gun and then pulling, so long as it didn't get too hot and warp when I pull.

Yes you could run a strap around it and pull it so long as you got something sturdy to pull against and also to hold the sled in place lol.

Not sure what style of puller would work, I also do not have one. Kind of an awkward space to access since the gear is quite larger than stock also

Heat maybe the easiest one to try, i would think some type of bearing puller that can be placed beside the sprocket and then tighten/press against the shaft?

I have some sheave pullers (no bearing style though) i can lend you or you can swing by some night and we can try to pull them. In Edmonton, PM if interested or in the area.

when i installed mine on a 2013 pro i used a very small triangle file and clearanced the lower sprocket so that it would go on the shaft. mine wouldn't go on when i got it from kurts. the top one however fit like a glove.

Yeaa I can see how in hindsight that would have been a better idea than making it fit with force. My top one as well fit very nice. I might get a chance to try some of these ideas tomorrow night.. can keep everyone posted when I do try and how successful (or unsuccessful) I am

All those who own a Polaris (Pro-Ride and AXYS) should read this. I have been reporting this since 2014 that the drive shaft splines are all over the place as far a tolerance are concerned. Some gears are loose and some are tight. This is not a function of the gear but of the shafts. If you find your gear wobbling, the bolt will fail. If you are lucky enough that your gear fits tight, well then it may be hard to get off but it at least won't fall off. It appears that some aftermarket machinists have made the splines in their gears smaller as they may have measured from a smaller spline shaft sample. TKI went by the original gear spline size so some of Tom's fit perfect and on some shafts they can fit loose.

I agree with what you say, after putting it on I never once had the thought of "I wonder if this would ever back out on me". Just a B*tch trying to get off ATM!

Never mind... got it!

"Too hot too touch" is the Answer. Used screw drivers wedged behind it to pry it off. One on each side.

I put it all back together in preparation for a trip next weekend out West. Didn't even think of the bearing, but not hard to take the gear off this new drive shaft as I didn't have to persuade it on like the last one.

It wasn't scorching or red hot by any means, just couldn't grab it with your bare hands, needed a glove for comfort. The gear is fine, stays cooler with the gear down anyways so I'm not concerned.

I have kurts helix on the secondary which is why I went with kurts on the belt drive. Wanted to keep it the same, seems to have been proven and certainly satisfies me!
