The correct height would be wherever they need to be to get the idle rpm you want.

so there is no recommended slide height to start with, then adjust idle screws?

On my 02 summit I believe the manual says set at .079

Beats me. I never cared. It would change with altitude and air density anyway. JMO.....You're really over thinking this.

Throttle Synchronization Procedure-Mikuni and Keihin
1. Remove air box, noting position of throttle cable
junction block. Reposition throttle cable and junction
block in same position when air box is reinstalled.
2. Referring to specification section in chapter 1, select
correct diameter Throttle Gap synchronization drill
gauge for your engine.
NOTE: Keihin carburetors, require a special tool with two
drill gauges separated by an 8mm gap. See illustrations
at right.
3. Back out idle screws about three turns.
4. Slightly lift throttle slides with throttle lever and insert
tool or drill gauge under throttle slide. Allow throttle
slides to return. NOTE: Be sure tool is positioned
properly on Keihin carburetors
5. Loosen lock nut and turn throttle cable adjuster (on
top of carburetor) in (clockwise) or out
(counterclockwise) as required until a slight drag can
be felt on the gauge or tool.
6. Securely tighten throttle cable synchronization lock
nut.
7. Repeat steps 3 through 5 on remaining carburetor.

Idle Gap Synchronization
8. Referring to chart in the Specifications section,
chapter 1, select correct diameter Idle Gap drill
gauge for the engine.
9. Slightly lift throttle slides with throttle lever and insert
idle gap drill gauge under throttle slide. Allow throttle
slides to return.
10. Turn idle adjustment screw in as required until only a
slight drag can be felt on the gauge.
11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 for remaining cylinders.
12. Verify proper throttle lever free play and adjust if
necessary, by loosening cable adjuster locknuts and
turning adjusters out equally until throttle lever
freeplay is correct.

Throttle Gap
Under Cutaway 0.102"- (2.6mm)
Idle Sync Gap
Under Cutaway 0.118"- (3.0mm)

The above is out of the shop manual. Bottom line is that you use a .102" drill bit to set the adjuster on the throttle cables and .118" for the idle screws. Once the adjustments have been made you can turn the idle screws equally to adjust rpm. I never used the tool they called for but just used the closest size drill bits I could find.
