Making a 174 feel like a much shorter sled.

Now that my fuel map and clutching is pretty much dialed in I am working on chassis improvements on my 2019 174 with the 850 Patriot.

The mods I am doing are unconventional but my goal is to make the sled feel like a 155 (or at least a 163) but have the traction of and flotation of the 174.

Things i am working on right now are steering effort, body roll and less track on the ground when in hardpack.

I am not ready to post my photos of the skid and steering modifications yet but I am wondering if there are others that are working on similar goals?

I too like the feel of a shorter sled. Best way to do it I found was to get a 154 track sled.
It feels just like a 154, it's uncanny.

Nope, 154's will not go where we are putting these long sleds. Sure, in the right conditions but not on those stupid days.

Always going to be trade offs. With the right rider a longer sled will go more places in deep snow. I've rode with lots that couldn't keep up to the old 154 2.5 though. Pulling on there ski's all day long.

I'm staying tuned. I've tried a few small things on my 174 XM to get it to feel more like a 163 but without much success. It just keeps that front end down and planted when I want to bring it up and swing it around.

Not a polaris but yes me too. I'm looking for some playfulness on my Doo 174. Watching.

In the past i have put a slight curve (up tip) at the back of my rail, really makes a huge difference. But you can't doit to just any rails and i wouldn't advise it unless you've done it before.
Did it to my 05 RT back in the day, it was a 162 and made it feel more like a 151 of the time.
I also did it to my 2010 Nytro using Iceage rails when i converted to a 174.
But i can't doit to my Winders cause the rails i bought have too many cut outs but Bomber rails i could had done...too late now.

BTW, in reverse in the deep works way better too.
As for wheelies, it will wheelie a little more but nothing that a lock out would not take care of.

Nothing that more power won't fix. Its easy to get a 174 on its tail if you have the muscle (hp)

Okay, a little teaser, but this is just one of the mods. Will know the direction to take from here after this weekend. Facts about this set up:

2 extra wheels are running on either side of the center window, they lift the track about 3/4" off the rails. Think about this and how it will affect handling, pivot point when turning on hard pack and backing up. Yes I know what can go wrong but I also know what can go right about this setup.

I actually had an aerocharger kit for it but didn't want the headache of an unreliable turbo setup. At this point it's easy to make power but not cheap and I'm not sure if I want to throw the cash at non-current chassis or just upgrade to a newer machine that will do what I want.

You could just go with a 9” rear wheel and achieve the same thing?

Those are 9" wheels in the back with the offset shaft but that is not achieving the same thing. This setup takes the last 9" of the track off the ground in hardpack and also makes the sled roll side to side like a t-motion or Alpha single rail. When the rails touch down it gets stable. A 174 has 9.5" more track on the ground over a 155. This set up will have similar on the ground as a 155 when on hardpack. Also those 2 front wheels run just on either side of the center of the track.

Nope. This is a head of the rear axle so the last part of the track won’t touch on hard pack making it easier t turn. 9” rear wheel it will be touching pretty the same spot as stock

Its the Doo remote handle bar mounted one. Works good as long as I park on a mogul to compress the front of the skid when tightening it up. Can make it go long anytime.

I like what you did. I think you will like it in marginal snow. But when we get a big dump of snow I would take them out. Cool idea.

The idea can be taken farther where I could put those wheels on a cam system to lower them when needed. This design is just a test to see what I can expect.

I'm REALLY liking the adjustable limiter strap on my 175 as its noticeable difference - long for creeks, short for hills
I've left mine out long and softened up the rear torsion blocks to 3. For my size I should probably have fat boy springs but I left the soft ones in and then have a skinz ARC to couple the rear when I want it. Still not as playful as I'd like. I could re-entry on my 163 but can't on the 174.
